Heart disease is now the leading cause of death globally, and Nepal is also facing a serious challenge. Experts warn that while treatment facilities have advanced, preventive measures are still very weak.
Heart Disease: A Global and Local Crisis
Cardiologist Dr. Prakashraj Regmi explained that 20 million people die globally each year due to heart disease. Alarmingly, 6.5 million of them are under 40 years old.
In Nepal, the situation is also concerning. Around 30,000 people die annually due to heart disease. Developing countries like Nepal are more vulnerable compared to developed nations.
Advances in Heart Treatment in Nepal
Over the last two decades, Nepal has made great progress in cardiac care. Currently, 95% of heart cases can be treated inside Nepal, with advanced surgeries available in Kathmandu and provincial hospitals.
However, preventive care is lagging. Problems like rheumatic heart disease among children still lack proper attention.
Lifestyle Risks and Prevention
Experts point out that lifestyle plays a huge role in heart disease. Major risk factors include:
Physical inactivity – One-third of people worldwide don’t exercise at all.
Unhealthy diet – High intake of processed food, alcohol, and sugary drinks.
Smoking and substance abuse – Directly linked to heart problems.
Dr. Regmi stressed that 30 minutes of walking daily can protect heart health. Globally, 80% of heart diseases are preventable through lifestyle changes.
Hypertension: The Hidden Threat
High blood pressure, often called the silent killer, is a major concern in Nepal. About 80% of hypertension patients do not receive treatment, while only 20% are under care.
The global focus of 29th September World Heart Day 2025 is on blood pressure awareness and regular measurement.
Pollution and Heart Health
Environmental pollution is emerging as a new risk factor. Studies show that dust particles and microplastics entering the body through respiration can block blood vessels, leading to heart attacks and strokes.
Noise pollution is also adding to cardiovascular stress in cities like Kathmandu.
Call for Prevention and Awareness
Dr. Regmi emphasized that while Nepal has advanced in heart treatment, prevention should be the top priority. He urged the government to invest more in awareness campaigns and preventive health measures.
“We must protect the heart we have left. Prevention provides long-term solutions,” Dr. Regmi said.
Conclusion
29th September World Heart Day 2025 is a reminder that while Nepal can now treat most cardiac cases, the focus must shift toward prevention. By adopting healthy lifestyles, managing blood pressure, and addressing pollution, Nepal can reduce the growing burden of heart disease.
