Gas industry weight investigation
25th November 2025, Kathmandu
The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection (DoC) has actively initiated an on-site inspection of gas industries.
Gas industry weight investigation
This action followed specific consumer complaints regarding the sale of underweight cooking gas cylinders. The DoC conducted raids on several gas plants located in Kathmandu and Kavre districts.
This intensive gas industry weight investigation aims to protect consumer interests and ensure fair business practices across the sector.
Extensive Monitoring Across Seven Plants
The Department confirmed that its monitoring team inspected a total of seven gas industries this Tuesday. The raids were conducted based on actionable reports and continuous consumer feedback.
The DoC team thoroughly checked cylinders for accurate weight. However, despite the initial complaints, the Department reported that they found no immediate issues with the gas weight during the surprise inspections. This suggests that compliance levels may be higher than initial complaints indicated.
Specific Directives Issued to Gas Producers
While no weight anomalies were detected, the inspection process revealed issues related to business documentation. Consequently, the Department issued a direct mandate to Nepal Gas Industry Pvt. Ltd. located in Balaju, Kathmandu-16.
This company must submit all business-related documents to the Department within three days. This requirement ensures proper licensing and operational compliance are maintained. The Department is actively enforcing these regulatory standards.
Plants Receiving Standard Instructions
The DoC also provided standard, general operating instructions to six other gas plants across the two districts. These instructions serve as reminders of regulatory obligations and best practices for consumer safety and fairness.
They emphasize the need for continuous self-monitoring and adherence to prescribed filling standards. These six companies include:
-
Gauri Shankar Gas Industry Pvt. Ltd. (Sanga, Banepa-13)
-
Surya Gas Industries Pvt. Ltd. (Thapagaun, Banepa-10)
-
Everest Gas Udyog Limited (Dakshinkali-1)
-
Sagarmatha Gas Udyog Pvt. Ltd. (Thapakot, Banepa-4)
-
Ugrachandi Gas Udyog Pvt. Ltd. (Nala, Banepa-1)
These plants received common guidelines to prevent future compliance issues. The department actively monitors the implementation of these directives.
Protecting Consumer Rights Through Vigilance
The recent inspections underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights. The Department of Commerce is continuously responding to public grievances and actively carrying out market monitoring.
The priority remains ensuring that consumers receive the exact product quantity they pay for. This aggressive stance against potential malpractice helps build public trust in the supply chain.
The gas industry weight investigation serves as a strong warning to all suppliers. The Department has promised to intensify its market surveillance.
They will take strict action against any business found manipulating product weights or engaging in unfair trade practices. Consumers are strongly encouraged to continue reporting any suspicious activity or product discrepancies to the relevant authorities. These reports are vital for driving timely regulatory action.
