Nepal Stakeholders Chart New Path For Childhood Cancer Survivorship and Palliative Care

A landmark stakeholder meeting on Childhood Cancer Survivorship and Pediatric Palliative Care, which was organized by Kanti Children’s Hospital with support from the Nepal Childhood Cancer Alliance (NCCA) under the Amgen project, led by the Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust in partnership with World Child Cancer.

The gathering brought together survivors, families, healthcare leaders, and national and international organizations to discuss challenges, share lived experiences, and chart a collaborative way forward.
Institutions present included the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), World Health Organization (WHO), Nepal Paediatric Society, NAPCare, Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Together Against Childhood Cancer (TACC), the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation, and Warming Heart Nepal.
The morning session featured powerful testimonies from survivors and a panel with parents of childhood cancer survivors, moderated by Dr. Sani Sipai. “Survivorship is not just about surviving cancer, it’s about the continuous journey beyond it,” Dr. Sipai said, emphasizing the need for continued support.
The second session highlighted the importance of pediatric palliative care, with experts presenting current services and sharing how specialized training has improved care in intensive units.
The meeting concluded with a collaborative discussion on strengthening Nepal’s support system for children with cancer. Officials from MoHP, WHO, and partner organizations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing survivorship and palliative services nationwide.
This historic meeting marks a significant step toward a more collaborative, compassionate, and family-centered approach to childhood cancer care in Nepal, ensuring that every child and family’s journey is met with expertise, empathy, and unwavering support.
