Cutting-Edge Brachytherapy Suite Launched at Kathmandu Cancer Center: All Services Now in One Place
Patient-Centric Brachytherapy Suite
9th December 2025, Kathmandu
The Kathmandu Cancer Center (KCC) in Tathali, Bhaktapur, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Brachytherapy Suite. This initiative significantly expands access to modern cancer treatment technology.
Patient-Centric Brachytherapy Suite
For the first time, patients requiring brachytherapy can receive all services, from consultation to treatment, within a single, dedicated location. This consolidation will make the treatment process smoother, safer, and more patient-centric brachytherapy suite.
This marks a major leap in Nepal cancer care technology and ensures advanced cancer treatment services are delivered with greater efficiency.
What is the New Brachytherapy Suite?
The new Brachytherapy Suite is a highly specialized unit designed to streamline the entire treatment journey. Previously, patients had to move to different locations within the facility for various stages of the brachytherapy process.
Now, the dedicated suite centralizes every step, reducing travel and waiting times. KCC asserts that this move is a crucial step towards enhancing the institution’s quality standards.
The Power of Brachytherapy
Dr. Simit Sapkota, Chairman and Clinical Oncologist at the Cancer Center, explained the profound benefits of brachytherapy. This technique involves delivering radiation directly inside the body to the cancerous area.
“Brachytherapy significantly reduces the need to surgically remove cancer-affected organs in many cases, helping to spare healthy organs,” Dr. Sapkota stated. “Before, patients had to go to separate places. Now, all services are integrated into one location.”
Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy. It uses radioactive sources placed very close to or inside the tumor. This allows for a very high dose of radiation to be delivered precisely to the cancer cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This focused approach is less invasive than traditional methods.
Leading the Way in Cancer Treatment
Kathmandu Cancer Center has been providing brachytherapy for various cancers since 2019. The excellent outcomes achieved have been presented in national and international journals and conferences.
While the technology is primarily used in Nepal for cervical cancer, KCC has successfully extended its application. Dr. Sapkota mentioned their successful use of brachytherapy for other cancers, including those of the lip, tongue, lung, liver, and esophagus.
Global Recognition for Nepalese Excellence
The unique treatment experiences and positive results have garnered international attention. Dr. Sapkota shared that their work has earned them opportunities to present as keynote speakers in countries including India, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, and African nations.
Dr. Subhash Pandit, a Clinical Oncologist, confirmed the growing international interest sparked by the outstanding treatment results achieved right here in Nepal.
“Teams from many countries, including the United States, have visited Kathmandu Cancer Center to observe and learn about the progress we have made in this field,” Dr. Pandit noted.
He emphasized that the new suite is an expansion of KCC’s services as a ‘Center of Excellence.’ The facility will ensure treatment is even more effective and adheres strictly to international standards. This commitment solidifies KCC’s position as a leader in advanced cancer treatment services within the region.
A Multidisciplinary Approach
The provision of brachytherapy services requires a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team. This collaborative effort includes: Clinical Oncologists, Interventional Radiologists, Cancer Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists
This team-based approach ensures comprehensive and personalized care for every patient receiving patient-centric brachytherapy suite services.
Dedicated Information Portal Launched
This portal compiles all published research, treatment experiences, and data gathered by KCC to date. The website provides a valuable resource for patients, researchers, and medical professionals interested in Nepal cancer care technology.
The launch of the state-of-the-art Brachytherapy Suite is a testament to KCC’s dedication to providing world-class cancer treatment. It represents a significant advancement, ensuring more effective, convenient, and safe care for cancer patients across the country and the region.
