This initiative, funded by the European Union under the SwitchAsia program, concluded its transformative journey on February 11, 2026, with a high-level Closing Workshop.
During the event’s pivotal panel discussion titled “Pathways for Mainstreaming Energy Efficiency in Nepal’s Building Sector,” Narhari Silwal, Head – SME/Retail Banking at Global IME Bank, shared critical insights into the future of green finance and sustainable construction in the country.
Overcoming Barriers to Green Housing
As the Head of SME/Retail Banking, Narhari Silwal addressed the current challenges facing the adoption of energy-efficient technologies in Nepal. He noted that while the potential for green buildings is vast, several hurdles remain:
Limited Public Awareness: Narhari Silwal highlighted that there is currently a low level of awareness and acceptance regarding green homes and related sustainable technologies among the Nepalese public.
The Need for Market Education: As the Head of SME/Retail Banking, he emphasized that stronger market education is vital to help consumers understand the long-term benefits of energy efficiency.
Ecosystem Collaboration: Narhari Silwal called for enhanced collaboration between financial institutions, government bodies, developers, and ecosystem partners to create a unified front for sustainable growth.
Accelerating Sustainable Adoption
To move the sector forward, Narhari Silwal outlined a vision for a more structured green building market. He suggested that the implementation of clear certification mechanisms and enabling policy initiatives would be instrumental in accelerating the adoption of energy-efficient housing nationwide.
