Rapti Cancer Screening Camp for Free Medical Checkup
16th March 2026, Kathmandu
The Rapti Academy of Health Sciences (RAHS) in Dang has announced a large-scale, free cancer screening camp scheduled for Chaitra 13.
Rapti Cancer Screening Camp
This initiative, organized in collaboration with the renowned BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan, is designed to enhance early diagnosis and provide specialized oncology services to the residents of western Nepal. By bringing expert care directly to the region, the institutions aim to alleviate the burden on patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances for critical medical consultations.
Strengthening Regional Healthcare
The camp is a direct result of a strategic partnership between RAHS and the BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. According to RAHS Acting Vice-Chancellor and Registrar Shyam Lamsal, the primary goal is to normalize proactive cancer screening and improve the community’s health literacy.
The initiative is not just a one-time event; it serves as a pilot for integrating long-term oncology services within the Rapti region, supported by the clinical expertise of the specialists from the national cancer hub in Chitwan.
Focus Areas: Women’s Reproductive Health
The screening program places a strong emphasis on early detection of reproductive system cancers. The medical team will focus on three primary areas:
Cervical Cancer: Utilizing screening methods to identify pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.
Breast Cancer: Conducting clinical breast examinations to identify suspicious lumps or abnormalities.
General Reproductive Health: Screening for infections or growths in the vaginal and reproductive tract that may indicate underlying risks.
Who Should Attend the Camp?
Medical professionals strongly advise women who fall into the following categories to prioritize attending the camp:
- Those experiencing persistent reproductive or uterine issues.
- Women who have discovered lumps or irregularities during self-examination.
- Individuals experiencing chronic vaginal itching, discharge, or infections.
- Anyone who has noticed unusual sores or wounds in the reproductive area.
The Vital Role of Early Detection
Early detection is widely considered the most effective tool in reducing cancer mortality. When detected at localized stages, treatment is often less invasive and significantly more successful. Programs like the Rapti Cancer Screening Camp help remove the primary barrier—cost and proximity—that prevents many from seeking early care.
The camp will also prioritize education, providing patients with:
- Information on identifying early symptoms.
- Guidance on lifestyle adjustments that reduce cancer risk.
- Support in navigating the next steps if a screening requires follow-up diagnostics.
Why This Collaboration Matters
For the residents of Dang and surrounding districts, this partnership is a significant step toward decentralizing specialized cancer care. Reducing the travel burden to Chitwan or Kathmandu ensures that low-income patients can access life-saving services that were previously out of reach.
As the program grows, RAHS plans to use the data collected from these camps to better understand the regional cancer prevalence and tailor future diagnostic services accordingly.
