KMC Free Cervical Cancer Screening: Step-by-Step Guide For Women at Bir Hospital
30th March 2026, Kathmandu
In a major step toward improving women’s public health, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has officially launched a month-long campaign offering free breast and cervical cancer screening.
KMC Free Cervical Cancer Screening
Organized in collaboration with Bir Hospital, this initiative provides not only free diagnostic tests but also preliminary treatment for those in need.
Prioritizing Early Detection and Women’s Health
Breast and cervical cancers remain among the most prevalent health challenges for women in Nepal. To address this, KMC has signed a formal agreement with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Bir Hospital, allocating approximately Rs. 15 million for this fiscal year to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent women from seeking life-saving care.
Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol highlighted the importance of the program, stating that regular screening is the most effective way to prevent premature deaths caused by cancer. “We want to make these services simple, easy, and accessible for everyone, including working women, housewives, and women with disabilities,” she remarked during the launch.
Key Details of the Screening Program
Target Group: Women aged 30 to 60 years, particularly those who missed previous screenings or showed positive symptoms in the past.
Duration: The campaign is currently active and will run until April 2, 2026 (Chaitra 20, 2082).
Daily Capacity: Bir Hospital is prepared to screen 100 to 120 women per day.
How to Access the Free Service
To ensure a streamlined process and avoid long queues at the hospital, KMC has implemented a referral-based system:
Visit Your Local Center: Interested residents must first visit their nearest Ward Health Promotion Center.
Get a Referral Slip: After recording your details, health officials will provide a referral slip with a specific date and time.
Screening at Bir Hospital: Present the slip at the ground floor of the Bir Hospital Surgical Building to receive your free check-up.
Diagnostic Procedures Included
The screening process is comprehensive and follows international health standards:
For Breast Cancer: A clinical breast examination is performed. If abnormalities are detected, the patient is referred for an ultrasound or mammography.
For Cervical Cancer: The hospital conducts HPV DNA PCR testing. If the results are positive, follow-up procedures such as colposcopy and biopsy are also provided free of charge.
Impact of the Initiative
On the very first day of the program, 136 referral slips were issued. Initial screenings have already identified 5 suspected cases of breast cancer and 3 suspected cases of cervical cancer, proving the critical necessity of early intervention.
By integrating local ward-level healthcare with tertiary-level hospital services, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is setting a benchmark for urban health management in Nepal.
