31st March 2026, Kathmandu
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) approaches its landmark 60th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Election, set for April 12–13, 2026, the business community is looking toward proven leadership to navigate the post-recession recovery.
FNCCI Central Member Commodity Candidate
Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta, the Managing Director of Mohit Group, has formally stepped into the race for Central Member (Commodity Category), seeking a third term to continue his mission of industrial reform.
With the election scheduled to take place at the Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, Dr. Gupta’s candidacy is being viewed as a bridge between established institutional knowledge and the urgent need for “Agentic AI” integration and digital transformation in Nepal’s trade sector.
Who is Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta?
Dr. Gupta is a titan of the Nepalese agro-industry, leading the Mohit Group, which stands as a cornerstone in the production of rice, pulses, and oil.
His journey from the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce & Industry (VICCI) to the central halls of FNCCI has been defined by a “work-first” philosophy.
Current Roles & Leadership:
Chairperson, FNCCI Trade Committee: Leading national policy dialogues on cross-border trade and transit.
Executive Committee Member, FNCCI: Serving his second term with a focus on banking and insurance reforms.
President, Association of Nepal Rice, Pulse & Oil Industry: Advocating for food security and domestic production protection.
The 2026 Election Agenda: Five Pillars of Progress
Running as an FNCCI Central Member Commodity Candidate, Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta has outlined a strategic roadmap aimed at revitalizing the private sector:
1. The “Turnover Tax” Revolution for SMEs
Dr. Gupta remains the loudest voice for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). His primary agenda is the implementation of a Simplified Turnover Tax. He argues that businesses with a turnover under 100 million should be freed from the “inspection terror” of multiple government agencies, allowing them to pay a lump-sum tax and focus on growth.
2. Collateral-Free Loans for Youth & Startups
To combat the brain drain of Nepalese youth, Dr. Gupta is lobbying for a policy where academic certificates act as collateral. This initiative aims to provide low-interest, collateral-free credit to graduates, empowering them to launch startups within Nepal.
3. Tourism & The “Religious Circuit.”
Dr. Gupta envisions a massive boost in tourism by creating a seamless Religious Circuit connecting Pashupatinath, Muktinath, Janaki Mandir, and Lumbini. His plan includes advocating for improved air connectivity and a “Red Carpet” welcome for Indian and international tourists.
4. NRN Investment & One-Window Systems
He proposes a One-Window Licensing System specifically for Non-Resident Nepalese (NRNs) to streamline investment into large-scale industrial projects, ensuring that capital from the diaspora is funneled directly into national development.
5. Agriculture & Food Sovereignty
Leveraging his expertise at Mohit Group, Dr. Gupta aims to protect domestic industries from unchecked smuggling. He is pushing for targeted subsidies and infrastructure support for Nepalese farmers to ensure the country achieves true food self-sufficiency.
A Proven Track Record of Crisis Management
Dr. Gupta’s leadership isn’t just about policy; it’s about action. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was a key figure in establishing the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Narayani Hospital and ensuring food supply chains remained unbroken across the country. His recent success in leading protests against high interest rates forced a dialogue with the Central Bank, eventually leading to the liquidity relief businesses enjoy today.
Conclusion: Why the Commodity Sector Needs Dr. Gupta
As a Commodity Candidate, Dr. Gupta understands that this sector is the backbone of the Nepalese economy. His blend of grassroots experience in Birgunj and high-level policy advocacy in Kathmandu makes him a formidable contender for the FNCCI 60th AGM elections.
“The private sector is the engine of Nepal’s growth. My goal for this third term is to ensure that engine runs on innovation, fair taxation, and the energy of our youth.” Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta
