Nepal Telecom Revolutionizes Prepaid Plans: 28-Day Packages Extended to 30 Days Following Ministry Dialogue
8th April 2026, Kathmandu
In a significant move aimed at enhancing consumer convenience and streamlining digital service delivery, Nepal Telecom (NTC) has officially begun transitioning its popular 28-day prepaid service packages into full 30-day monthly cycles.

This strategic shift, effective immediately for select plans, marks a departure from the traditional 28-day validity period that has long been a point of contention among mobile subscribers in Nepal.
The state-owned telecommunications giant announced that the “Combo-299 Pack” was the first to receive this upgrade, with its validity extended from 28 days to 30 days starting Tuesday night.
This change ensures that customers receive more value for the same price, effectively providing two additional days of service at no extra cost.
The Catalyst: Policy Dialogue and Consumer-Centric Governance
This landmark decision follows a high-level consultative meeting between the Honorable Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Bikram Timilsina, and the leadership of Nepal Telecom.
During the discussions, Minister Timilsina emphasized the need for telecommunication services to align more closely with the Gregorian and Nepali calendar months to simplify financial planning for citizens.
Following the Minister’s directive, the implementation was fast-tracked. Reena Dangol, the Acting Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, confirmed that the transition is being handled in phases to ensure system stability.
“We have successfully converted the first 28-day package into a 30-day plan. Our technical teams are working around the clock, and we aim to have every single 28-day prepaid package transitioned to a 30-day validity period by April 24 (Baisakh 11),” stated Dangol.
Direct Benefits to Nepalese Consumers
The shift from 28 to 30 days is not merely a technical adjustment; it carries significant practical benefits for the millions of NTC users across the country:
Simplified Recharge Cycles: Previously, a 28-day cycle meant that the renewal date shifted every month, often leading to confusion and unintended service interruptions.
With a 30-day cycle, customers can align their mobile expenses with their monthly salary cycles or household budgets, typically requiring only one recharge per month.
Increased Value for Money: By maintaining the same price point while adding two extra days of validity, NTC is effectively lowering the daily cost of data, voice, and SMS services. This “bonus” period provides a tangible financial cushion for low-to-middle-income users.
Enhanced User Experience: The move reduces the frequency of “Low Balance” notifications and the hassle of frequent re-subscriptions, leading to a more seamless digital experience for students, professionals, and rural users alike.
Strategic Impact on the Telecommunications Sector
This reform by Nepal Telecom is expected to trigger a ripple effect across the Nepalese ICT landscape. As the market leader, NTC’s move toward “True Monthly” billing sets a new competitive benchmark.
Industry analysts suggest that private players may soon feel the pressure to follow suit to maintain their subscriber bases.
Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the government’s broader Digital Nepal Framework, which seeks to make information technology more accessible and affordable.
By removing the “hidden cost” of the 13th month, a phenomenon where 28-day cycles force users to pay for 13 cycles in a 12-month year, NTC is positioning itself as a transparent, consumer-first service provider.
Timeline and Implementation Roadmap
According to NTC’s technical roadmap, the transition will follow a strict schedule:
Phase 1 (Completed): Upgrade of the Combo-299 Pack.
Phase 2 (Ongoing): Gradual migration of mid-tier data and voice packs.
Phase 3 (Deadline: April 24): Complete migration of all remaining prepaid 28-day offerings.
Customers are advised that they do not need to take any manual action. The extended validity will be automatically applied to new subscriptions of the upgraded packs.
Those with existing active 28-day packs will see the 30-day validity reflected upon their next renewal after the specific pack’s migration date.
A Leap Toward Consumer Satisfaction
Under the leadership of Minister Bikram Timilsina and the executive team at Nepal Telecom, this move is being hailed as a “User-Friendly Reform.” It reflects a growing trend in the Nepalese public sector to listen to consumer grievances and implement data-driven solutions that provide immediate relief.
As Nepal moves toward a more digitized economy, where mobile data is as essential as electricity or water, such policy shifts ensure that the digital divide is bridged not just through infrastructure, but through fair and logical pricing models.
