NADA Meets Revenue Secretary
Key Highlights of the Discussion
Policy Reforms for Growth: President Upreti emphasized that adjusting current regulations is essential to breathe life into the automobile industry. He noted that a dynamic auto sector would directly increase government revenue and create more jobs.
Support for CKD Industries: NADA advocated for the stability of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly plants. The delegation urged the government to provide incentives for component manufacturing and offer tax exemptions on raw material imports.
Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio: Past President Karan Chaudhary highlighted the urgent need to increase the LTV ratio. Increasing this limit would make vehicles more accessible to buyers, thereby boosting sales and expanding the overall automotive ecosystem.
Redefining Luxury: Specialized Advisor Rajan Babu Shrestha criticized the government’s continued classification of vehicles as “luxury goods.” He called for a customs duty adjustment and stricter border controls to prevent illegal imports caused by GST differences in India.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Standards: General Secretary Milan Babu Malla addressed concerns regarding the measurement of “peak power” in imported EVs, stating that NADA is ready to collaborate with the government to establish clear technical standards.
Government Response
Revenue Secretary Bhupal Baral acknowledged the validity of NADA’s suggestions. He stated that the ministry is well aware of these challenges and considers the proposed solutions implementable for the betterment of the national economy.
