Discover the incredible journey of Ruby Kumari Thakur, the 25-year-old newly elected Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives.

Living in a modest single-story house on just 4 dhurs of land in Mujeliya, Janakpur, Ruby’s story is a testament to resilience. With a father working in Saudi Arabia and a mother working as a sharecropper, her rise from a simple rural background to a top constitutional post serves as a powerful message that grand dreams don’t require grand mansions.
The rise of Ruby Thakur is more than just a political appointment; it is a powerful symbol of the “New Nepal,” where the daughter of a migrant worker and a sharecropper can reach the second-highest parliamentary seat in the country.
A Family Grounded in Simplicity
While the rest of the country celebrates her victory, Ruby’s family remains remarkably grounded. Her father, Sogarath Thakur, was working in Saudi Arabia when he first heard the news that his daughter had become a Member of Parliament.
“When fellow Nepalese in Saudi Arabia congratulated me, my chest swelled with pride,” Sogarath shared upon his recent return for a two-month break. “Because of poverty, I had to work abroad and couldn’t spend much time with her, but seeing her bring honor to Janakpur makes every sacrifice worth it.”
Equally inspiring is her mother, Renu Thakur, who continues to toil as a “Bataiya” (sharecropper) in the local fields. For Renu, terms like “Deputy Speaker” or “Member of Parliament” remain abstract. To her, Ruby is simply her daughter who calls once or twice a day to say “everything is fine.”
Breaking the “Glass Ceiling” of Madhesh
Ruby’s journey was paved with educational persistence. Despite social pressures in rural Madhesh, where relatives suggested that girls shouldn’t be overeducated or sent away from home, her mother stood firm.
Education: Ruby completed her diploma in Civil Engineering from Balara Polytechnic and is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree.
Professional Start: Before entering politics, she worked at an architectural consultancy, earning 20,000 NPR per month to support her family.
Political Entry: Inspired by the social movements led by Harka Sampang, she joined the Shram Sanskriti Party and was elected via the Proportional Representation (PR) system under the Madheshi women cluster.
A Message of Hope for the Youth
On April 10, 2026, Ruby Kumari Thakur made history as the youngest Deputy Speaker in Nepal’s parliamentary records. Back in Mujeliya, her younger brother, Shani Kumar Thakur, who recently completed his SEE, now looks at the roof where he once dried grain with a new perspective. His sister’s success has sparked a dream in him to also achieve greatness through education.
The tiny house in Mujeliya serves as a reminder to every citizen: You don’t need a palace to dream big.
As Ruby takes her seat in the federal parliament, she carries with her the hopes of thousands of “Rubys” across Nepal, proving that merit and determination can bridge the gap between a 4-dhur plot and the halls of power.
