Nepal Rastra Bank to Issue Newly Designed NPR 1000 Banknote

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is set to introduce a newly designed 1,000 Nepalese Rupee banknote belonging to the Series 2025 AD.

While maintaining the standard physical dimensions of previous issues, the revised note incorporates updated color schemes, enhanced visual aesthetics, and advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and facilitate accessibility for visually impaired individuals. The banknote features the official signature of NRB Governor Prof. Dr. Bishwa Nath Poudel.

Front Design and Security Features

The obverse side of the 1,000 Rupee banknote integrates distinct visual elements and security mechanisms.

• Color Scheme and Theme: Designed with a pale green primary tone framed within a purple border.
• Front Imagery: Features an illustration of Mount Everest along with a rhododendron watermark containing the numeral “1000”.
• Optical and Tactile Features: Includes a “See-Through Register” displaying the complete numeral “1000” when held against light, a raised tactile Roman letter “M” with horizontal lines for visually impaired accessibility, and an oval emblem near Mount Everest showing an image of Bhagwati that shifts from gold to green when tilted.
• Security Thread: Equipped with a 3.5 mm wide color-shifting security thread displaying “NRB” and “1000”, which changes from red to green depending on the viewing angle.

Reverse Design and Currency Status

The reverse side highlights cultural heritage, wildlife symbolism, and national identity elements.

• Reverse Imagery: Depicts the famous twin elephants Ram and Laxman born to the elephant Devkali at the government elephant breeding center in Chitwan, alongside seven rhododendron flowers representing Nepal’s seven provinces and the historical pillar at Lhanchok in Hanumandhoka.
• Inscriptions and Series Tag: Features the text “Rupees One Thousand” with “Series 2025 AD” inscribed at the bottom margin.
• Legal Tender Status: The new series initiates from a fresh serial number prefix; existing 1,000 Rupee banknotes from prior series will remain valid legal tender alongside the new issuance.
