Xtreme Energy Drink, an energy drink brand aggressively expanding its market footprint across Nepal, has come under scrutiny for erecting non-compliant and unauthorized billboard displays across several key corridors in the capital.
Municipal authorities in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) have confirmed that advertisements installed in commercial hubs including Sinamangal, Purano Baneshwor, and various locations within Ward No. 31 violate local municipal advertising criteria.
Municipal Crackdown on Unauthorized Billboards
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has tightened enforcement against illegal commercial branding and hoarding boards that bypass city approval protocols.
According to Noor Nidhi Neupane, Information Officer for Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the municipal administration has already initiated city-wide operations to remove unauthorized commercial displays.
“Except for registered digital displays, the authority to permit standard commercial advertising boards rests directly with the respective ward offices. Whenever illegal signage is identified, prompt removal procedures are triggered through local ward authorities.” Noor Nidhi Neupane, Information Officer, KMC
Reinforcing the city’s position, Suresh Sahu Shrestha, Ward Secretary for Ward No. 31, emphasized that businesses are strictly prohibited from placing promotional materials without prior approval, warning that remaining non-compliant boards will face immediate removal.
Brand Halts Outdoor Campaign Ahead of Nepal Premier League (NPL)
Responding to municipal action, representatives from Xtreme Energy Drink clarified that the brand has paused its outdoor advertising drive across the capital city.
Speaking on behalf of the brand, Dikshya Thapa stated that Xtreme Energy Drink has actively taken down its hoarding boards across KMC locations and temporarily suspended its outdoor billboard placements.
“We have temporarily halted our physical advertising board campaigns in the city. Our primary promotional focus will shift toward the upcoming Nepal Premier League (NPL) activities,” Thapa confirmed.
KMC Advertising Regulations Under Financial Act 2079
Kathmandu Metropolitan City regulates urban signage and commercial promotions under the directives of the Financial Act 2079 (2022). The municipal government generates revenue across 36 distinct tax categories, including advertisement tax, property tax, business tax, and rental tax, to manage urban development and public infrastructure.
Under these standards, outdoor ad placements must meet set structural, safety, and fee requirements prior to setup. Unregistered displays risk immediate confiscation along with regulatory fines.
