Citizens Bank International is a key player in Nepal’s journey towards energy independence, with its substantial investments in the country’s hydropower sector.
Citizens Bank Hydropower Investment
The bank’s strategic focus on renewable energy projects is not only a commercial decision but also a commitment to national development. Its latest venture, leading a consortium to finance the Sanivery Hydropower Project, showcases this dedication.
A Collaborative Approach to Financing
The Sanivery Hydropower Project, a 44.52 MW initiative in Rukum (East) district, is a prime example of a successful public-private partnership. Citizens Bank, serving as the lead financial institution, has spearheaded a consortium including Nabil Bank, Nepal Investment Mega Bank, Siddhartha Bank, and Sanima Bank. This collaborative effort ensures the project receives the necessary funding to proceed smoothly.
This joint investment model, where multiple banks pool resources, is crucial for financing large-scale infrastructure projects that are too capital-intensive for a single institution.
Citizens Bank has committed NPR 2.50 billion to the project, a significant portion of the total NPR 7.20 billion loan package. The remaining 25% of the project’s estimated cost of NPR 9.60 billion will be covered by the project’s promoters, Expert Hydro Investment Pvt. Ltd.
A Legacy of Hydropower Investment
The Citizens Bank hydropower investment in the Sanivery project is part of a broader, long-term strategy. The bank’s CEO, Ganesh Raj Pokharel, has stated that the bank’s portfolio includes investments in dozens of hydropower projects, both completed and under construction, with a total capacity of over 1,200 MW.
This demonstrates a consistent and robust commitment to harnessing Nepal’s abundant water resources for clean energy.
By financing these projects, the bank directly contributes to strengthening the national power grid, reducing dependency on imported electricity, and fostering economic growth. The Sanivery project alone is expected to generate 281.113 GWh of clean energy annually, a tangible contribution to Nepal’s energy security.
Contributing to a Green Economy
Beyond financial returns, Citizens Bank’s hydropower investment aligns with global efforts to transition to a green economy. Hydropower is a renewable energy source that produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions, making it an environmentally friendly option. By supporting such projects, Citizens Bank is helping Nepal meet its climate goals and build a sustainable future. This proactive role in the energy sector solidifies the bank’s position as a forward-thinking and socially responsible financial institution in Nepal.
