This marks the first time in Nepal’s history that a woman has been elevated to lead the government during a transitional phase.
Karki is expected to take the oath this evening at Sheetal Niwas, following a high-stakes political agreement. The interim government will oversee preparations for Nepal’s next political process and guide the nation through a critical transition.
Day-Long Negotiations at Sheetal Niwas
The agreement was reached after marathon discussions on Friday. According to sources, President Ram Chandra Paudel, who had previously insisted that leadership be transferred to Karki before dissolving parliament, finally conceded to dissolve the House and appoint her as Prime Minister.
The President was under increasing pressure as youth protesters, aligned with the GenZ Movement, threatened to surround Sheetal Niwas. To prevent further escalation, Paudel informed top party leaders that he would dissolve the House and immediately move forward with Karki’s appointment.
GenZ Movement and Political Pressure
While several major political parties, including Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the Maoist Centre, had suggested that Karki lead a government through the existing parliament, she firmly rejected this proposal. Karki insisted that she would only assume leadership after parliament was dissolved, aligning with the GenZ Movement’s demand for fresh political restructuring.
Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah also backed this stance, calling the dissolution of parliament the “minimum bottom line” for any agreement.
Military’s Warning of Emergency Rule
Talks at the President’s office on Thursday night and Friday morning had ended in a stalemate. As the deadlock continued, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel warned that the crisis could spiral into a state of emergency if a government was not formed by evening. He even briefed Karki and political leaders on potential emergency measures. However, second-tier party leaders rejected the emergency option, vowing to resist such a move through mass protests.
Consensus on Karki’s Leadership
The breakthrough came after GenZ representatives proposed Karki as interim head of government during a Wednesday meeting at Army Headquarters. General Sigdel conveyed this proposal to the President, leading to fresh consultations with party leaders.
Ultimately, leaders of the major political parties agreed to support Karki in line with the Gen Z mandate. Though they preferred a parliamentary route, mounting public pressure and fears of instability pushed them toward endorsing her appointment.
What Comes Next?
As Nepal heads into this transitional phase, the interim government under Prime Minister Sushila Karki will be tasked with ensuring stability, preparing for the next political roadmap, and addressing demands for reform from the youth-led GenZ movement.
This historic decision marks a turning point in Nepal’s political history, not only because it dissolves the existing parliament but also because it installs the country’s first female interim Prime Minister at a time of intense political transition.
