19th October 2025, Kathmandu
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has actively pushed forward its urban illumination efforts.
KMC High-Mast Light
The ambitious project involving the KMC High-Mast Light Installation at 62 key intersections across the city is now in its final stage of completion.
This significant upgrade aims to dramatically enhance visibility and public safety throughout the capital, transforming the urban landscape ahead of the major Tihar festival.
Project Scope and Financial Outlay
The metropolis initially identified seventy intersections requiring these powerful high-mast lights. In the first phase, KMC selected and executed the installation at 62 spots.
Ramchandra Nepali, Head of the Public Works Department at KMC, actively confirmed that pole erection has concluded, and light fitting is nearing finalization.
The estimated cost for this large-scale urban development project was approximately Rs. 9.99 crore. However, the public procurement process successfully secured the work for a slightly reduced amount of Rs. 9 crore 85 lakh 22 thousand 144.
Accelerating Completion for the Festival
The KMC originally set the contract completion deadline for mid-January (Poush 30). Officials, however, actively prioritized the project.
They worked to finish the light installation ahead of the Tihar festival. This accelerated completion ensures that the entire city can celebrate the “Festival of Lights” under a brighter, safer environment. This timely action has been highly praised by local residents and commuters.
Technical Specifications and Smart Features
The high-mast lights come in two distinct sizes tailored to the specific needs of the intersections. A total of twenty-one intersections will feature $12.5$ meter-tall poles, each equipped with six powerful lights. The remaining forty-one intersections will utilize taller, $16$-meter poles, each mounting eight light units.
All lights boast a substantial $1000$ watt capacity. More importantly for an ICT-focused portal, these systems incorporate an advanced software-based control mechanism.
This technology actively allows operators to adjust the light intensity. They can choose between bright and dim settings based on real-time needs and energy conservation goals. This is a significant technological leap in municipal lighting.
Enhancing Urban Safety and Infrastructure
The introduction of high-mast lighting directly addresses a long-standing issue of inadequate visibility at major junctions.
Poor street lighting poses significant safety risks for pedestrians and drivers, especially during the long hours of darkness. The new $1000$W lights will powerfully illuminate large areas, actively reducing the potential for traffic accidents and enhancing security across the metropolitan area.
The durability and height of the new poles also represent a major infrastructure improvement. They are built to withstand adverse weather conditions, ensuring long-term, reliable lighting for the city. This active focus on robust infrastructure demonstrates KMC’s commitment to modern urban planning.
The Smart City Vision
This KMC High-Mast Light Installation project is a visible component of the city’s broader ‘Ujyalo Mahanagar’ or ‘Bright Metropolis’ plan.
By integrating smart technology into public works, Kathmandu is taking definitive steps toward becoming a ‘smart city.’ The ability to remotely monitor and adjust the lights through a centralized software system will actively optimize energy consumption and streamline maintenance.
The successful, early completion of this major project sends a strong message. It underscores the administration’s active commitment to efficient public service delivery.
KMC plans to continue investing in such technologically advanced projects. The goal is simple: create a modern, safe, and efficiently run capital for all residents. Future phases are expected to cover the remaining identified spots, further illuminating the city.
