The Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, officially inaugurated the Free WiFi New Buspark Kathmandu service at Gongabu’s New Bus Park.

This launch fulfills a key commitment made by the Minister upon assuming office on September 22 (Ashoj 6), which aimed to provide complimentary wireless internet access across crucial public locations within the Kathmandu Valley.
The initiative marks a significant step towards bridging the digital divide, starting with a major urban transit hub. Minister Kharel confirmed that the free internet service is not confined to the New Bus Park alone but has been successfully installed across 19 locations throughout the Kathmandu Valley.
Fulfilling a Ministerial Commitment
Minister Kharel emphasized that the free internet service rollout directly corresponds to a pledge made during his tenure assumption. He stressed that this is just the beginning of a larger national connectivity drive.
“We initiated the free internet service installation according to the commitment made during my assumption of office as Minister,” he stated.
He affirmed the plan to gradually expand this service beyond the Valley, ensuring wider geographic coverage. The government is actively working to extend internet services to both the capital and the most remote areas of Nepal.
Focus on Remote and Underserved Regions
While celebrating the urban launch, Minister Kharel highlighted the government’s concurrent efforts in difficult terrains. He proudly mentioned that internet service has already reached remote locations such as Darchula, Bajhang, Jajarkot, and the Tilicho Base Camp in Manang.
The Minister acknowledged areas facing network challenges and stated that the government gives high priority to delivering effective internet service to regions with currently poor network coverage, including Solukhumbu, Ramechhap, Rautahat, Myagdi, and Baitadi. This dual strategy tackles both high-density urban needs and the essential connectivity demands of remote communities.
National Goals for Digital Inclusion
The Ministry maintains a comprehensive vision for national digital access. Minister Kharel reiterated the government’s ambitious goal of delivering free internet access to all seven provincial capitals across the country.
He assured that necessary work is continuously underway to ensure that both telephone and internet services reach every corner of Nepal—from bustling villages to expansive cities, and from the most accessible to the most remote regions. This commitment forms a foundation for future digital economic growth and inclusive governance.
Monitoring Quality and Consistency
Immediately following the launch at the New Bus Park, Minister Kharel underscored the importance of service quality and reliability. He personally visited other key public locations to monitor the newly operational internet services.
The Minister conducted follow-up visits and supervision tours to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj, the Pashupatinath Temple complex, and the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
These proactive visits confirm the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring the new public WiFi infrastructure operates efficiently and consistently for the benefit of all users.
