This historic consignment, valued at approximately Rs 5.48 million, was successfully processed and dispatched through the Bhairahawa Customs Office.
This breakthrough underscores the growing capacity and ambition of Nepal’s agro-processing industries to compete in highly demanding international markets.
The inaugural export involved two containers, totaling an impressive 43,520 kilograms of frozen French fries. The products, manufactured by First Choice Foods Pvt. Ltd., a Rupandehi-based company, were shipped to Genco LLC, a food distribution company based in the United States.
This achievement is particularly significant as the US market maintains some of the world’s strictest quality and competition standards for imported food items.
A Testament to Industrial Growth and Quality
In an official statement, the Bhairahawa Customs Office heralded the shipment as a pivotal moment for the country’s industrial development.
The successful entry of a Nepali-produced food item into a competitive arena like the US market reflects a growing confidence in the quality and safety standards of Nepali goods.
First Choice Foods Pvt. Ltd., known as Nepal’s largest potato processing industry, operates with a substantial investment and has achieved international certifications like BRCGS for food safety and quality.
The company actively sources potatoes from over 35,000 farmers across 26 districts of Nepal, directly connecting local agriculture with global commerce. This export is expected to substantially contribute to foreign currency earnings and actively promote entrepreneurship across the agricultural value chain.
Paving the Way for Future Exports
The Customs Office expressed strong confidence that the successful entry of Nepali French fries into the US market will open doors for other Nepali products to expand their reach on the global stage. This landmark shipment provides a powerful precedent, proving that Nepali goods can meet the stringent requirements of high-value markets.
The success of this export effort is seen as a catalyst for other domestic manufacturers, demonstrating that dedicated investment in modern technology and quality control can yield international competitiveness. The achievement moves beyond simply substituting imports; it firmly establishes Nepal as an emerging player in the global frozen food category.
Commitment to Export Facilitation
To ensure this remains a sustainable trend and not a one-off event, the Bhairahawa Customs Office reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing its role as an export facilitator.
The office plans to continuously improve its export-related services, focusing on streamlining procedural efficiency and ensuring easy access to necessary information for producers and exporters.
The Customs Office further stated that it will actively prioritize strengthening collaboration with the private sector, local producers, transport and logistics providers, and quality control agencies.
This unified approach is considered essential for comprehensively enhancing Nepal’s long-term export potential and successfully navigating the complexities of international trade.
