Recognized as the Best Farmer of Sudurpaschim Province, Badaik’s story is one of innovation, resilience, and a dedication to scientific methods that are now inspiring Nepalese farmers nationwide.

The Shift from Tradition to High-Tech Farming

Forced to abandon his studies, Asareram Badaik dedicated himself to farming, initially with sugarcane in 2006. His breakthrough came when he realized the limitations of traditional practices and began seeking modern alternatives, primarily by learning from neighboring India.

Badaik’s success lies in his calculated use of high-impact technologies and methods:

Drone Technology: He is one of the pioneering farmers using drones in his fields for the precise application of seeds, fertilizer, and pesticides.

Sugarcane Innovation: He transitioned from traditional planting to the highly efficient single-bud and seedling methods. This critical shift slashed his seed costs by an impressive 65% while significantly boosting overall yields.

Rice Farming Efficiency: In his rice fields, he employs the broadcasting method complemented by a laser leveller. This combination has successfully halved his costs and improved production consistency.

Ecological and Financial Sustainability

Badaik’s model is not just about technology; it’s about sustainable resource management. He actively employs crop rotation to maintain soil health and grows dhaincha, a green manure crop, to naturally infuse the soil with nitrogen.

In sugarcane specifically, he has achieved a remarkable tripling of productivity by adopting scientific spacing techniques. His annual financial goal is ambitious yet attainable: to earn Rs 2 million from just one bigha of land, proving that modern farming is a lucrative business.

A Regional and National Inspiration

Asareram Badaik’s expertise extends beyond his own farm. He has strong international ties, being connected with India’s Ganna Master group, a network of 2,600 progressive sugarcane farmers. Through this association, he received training on operating agricultural drones, a service he now plans to offer to other local farmers.

His dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he received both the prestigious Outstanding Farmer Award and the Bhimdatta Provincial Best Farmer Award.

Today, Badaik cultivates five bighas of land, producing sugarcane, rice, and potatoes for local markets and sugar mills, while employing 15 people, primarily women.

Badaik believes the future of Nepal’s agriculture is bright, provided the government addresses key systemic issues like improving fertilizer supply and ensuring robust market access for farmers. His journey stands as a powerful testament to the profitability and potential of combining traditional wisdom with modern agricultural innovation.
