Google has released Android 16 Beta 3, achieving the Platform Stability milestone. This means the API surface and app behaviors are now final, allowing developers to push Android 16-targeted apps to the Play Store.
Android 16 Beta 3 Released
The stable version of Android 16 is expected to launch on supported Pixel devices by June 2025, with a minor update planned for late 2025.
Key Features in Beta 3
The update introduces several new features, focusing on accessibility and security.
1. Auracast Broadcast Audio Support
Android 16 Beta 3 now supports Auracast, a feature for compatible LE Audio hearing aids. Auracast allows hearing aids and earbuds to receive audio streams from public venues like airports and concerts. This improves audio accessibility for users with hearing impairments.
2. Outline Text for Low Vision Users
The update replaces high-contrast text with outline text, designed to help users with low vision. Outline text creates a larger contrasting area around text, making it easier to read. Developers can use new AccessibilityManager APIs to check if this mode is active.
3. Local Network Protection (LNP)
Beta 3 introduces early support for Local Network Protection, a future feature that will give users more control over app access to local network devices. Currently, apps with INTERNET permission can access local networks, but LNP will require specific permissions.
Developer Updates
With Platform Stability reached, developers can now finalize their apps for Android 16. Google is also working closely with device partners to ensure Android 16 reaches more devices. Developers are encouraged to test their apps with the new features and provide feedback.
What’s Next?
Only one more beta release is planned for April, focusing on bug fixes and final adjustments. The stable version of Android 16 will launch by June 2025, followed by a minor update later in the year.
This marks a shift in Google’s Android release strategy, emphasizing incremental updates and better collaboration with developers and manufacturers.
