Shazam is a mobile application that has the function of identifying any song played on the radio or any other device. It was released for iPhone in the year 2008 and was one of the earliest application available since the start of Apple’s App Store.
Since its release, Shazam has had more than 1 billion downloads. However, with the availability of several new platforms which integrates the same function of identifying music, Shazam has lost its original popularity. It placed at 92 on Apples iTunes most downloaded application char and didn’t even teach the top 100 for Google Play Store.
Despite its fading popularity, Apple has decided to buy this bios, lyrics and personalized music identifying app; Shazam. Although the acquisition has been approved neither Shazam nor Apple has disclosed the purchase price. It is also believed that either Shazam will remain a standalone application or will become a part of Apple’s Music offerings.
Apple’s vice president of Apple Music Mr. Oliver Schusser in a statement said that “With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music.”
It is believed that the data that has been collected by Shazam since 2008, will help Apple Music compete with companies like Spotify. Spotify is one of the biggest applications for music which creates a playlist of new music based on the current music that a person is listening to. In fact, it was reported that Spotify was also interested in buying Shazam.
