Bhagwat Bhattarai Elected SEJON President at 27th Convention in Nepal

Bhagwat Bhattarai has been elected as the new President of the Society of Economic Journalists of Nepal (SEJON). The results were announced during SEJON’s 27th Convention and General Assembly, where the new executive committee was formed.

Bhattarai secured 110 votes in the presidential race, defeating his rivals Bishwas Regmi, who obtained 92 votes, and Asha Thapaliya, who received 41 votes. With this victory, Bhattarai now leads SEJON, an organization representing economic journalists across Nepal.

General Secretary and Treasurer Elected

In addition to the presidency, other key positions in SEJON’s new leadership were also decided.

General Secretary: Kamal Kumar Basnet was elected after receiving 139 votes, defeating opponent Achyut Puri, who got 104 votes.

Treasurer: Kesu Lamichhane won with 133 votes, while her competitor Mamata Thapa secured 108 votes.

Both Basnet and Lamichhane are expected to play an important role in strengthening SEJON’s organizational activities and financial management.

Vice-President and Secretary Elected Unopposed

Two key leadership positions were filled without contest.

Vice-President: Jeevan Basnet was elected unopposed.

Secretary: Shankar Pandit was also elected unopposed.

Their uncontested election shows broad support and consensus within the society.

Executive Members Announced

The convention also elected five members to the SEJON executive committee. They are:

Arjun Tamang – 141 votes

Kamal Dhital – 185 votes

Bhojraj Bhandari – 146 votes

Raju Baskota – 159 votes

Sima Tamang – 162 votes

These members will be working alongside the newly elected leadership to advance SEJON’s objectives and represent the interests of economic journalists nationwide.

27th SEJON Convention

The 27th Convention and General Assembly of SEJON marked a significant event for Nepal’s economic journalism community. With the election of the new executive committee, SEJON aims to enhance the role of economic journalists in shaping public discourse, ensuring media independence, and contributing to informed economic policymaking.
