Tika and Jamara: Blessings of Goddess Durga

Bijaya Dashami marks the triumphant victory of divine power over demonic forces, symbolizing the eternal win of truth over falsehood. The Tika ceremony is a transfer of this powerful energy:

Tika: A red paste made from rice grains, curd, and vermillion, applied to the forehead. The red color is symbolic of the sacred blood bond of family and the blessing of good fortune.

Jamara: Yellow barley or maize seedlings, sprouted in a secluded, dark room (Dashain Ghar) since Ghatasthapana (the first day of Dashain). This holy offering is worn behind the ears and symbolizes good harvest, prosperity, and the abundant grace (prasad) of Goddess Durga.

The Tika is prepared from the sacred water and rice of the Kalash (urn) established on Ghatasthapana using Vedic rituals.

Can I Receive Tika at Any Time Today?

While the precise time of 11:53 AM is the uttam saait determined by astrologers, the Samiti also acknowledges a popular religious belief: Bijaya Dashami itself is an inherently holy day, and therefore, people may receive Tika throughout the day.

The tradition of receiving blessings continues well past the official auspicious moment. Those unable to receive Tika today can continue the custom by visiting relatives and receiving blessings from elders up to the final day of the festival, Kojagrat Purnima (the full moon night).

The Significance of Bijaya Dashami

As the climax of the Bada Dashain festival, Bijaya Dashami celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This momentous occasion reinforces the importance of spiritual strength, familial bonds, and the continuous triumph of righteousness. Today, family members, friends, and relatives gather for feasts, reunions, and the sacred act of receiving and offering Tika, uniting the Nepalese community in a joyous celebration.
