3rd October 2025, Kathmandu
In response to continuous heavy rainfall and the growing risk of landslides and flooding, the District Administration Office, Kavrepalanchok, has announced the temporary nighttime closure of the BP Highway.
BP Highway Closed
The decision aims to ensure the safety of travelers and minimize disaster-related incidents along one of Nepal’s most important highways.
According to the official notice issued by Chief District Officer (CDO) Umesh Kumar Dhakal, the BP Highway (Kavre Bhanjyang–Bhakundebesi–Sindhuli section) will remain closed to all vehicles except ambulances and essential services from Ashoj 16 to Ashoj 21 (October 2 to October 7). The restriction will be enforced daily from 5 PM to 5 AM, when visibility is low and the risk of landslides increases significantly.
High Rainfall and Increased Risk of Landslides
The Meteorological Forecast Division has predicted heavy rainfall across central Nepal, especially in Kavre, Sindhuli, and surrounding districts. As a result, local rivers, including the Roshi Khola, are expected to experience sudden rises in water levels, increasing the potential for flash floods. The administration has warned that traffic police may stop vehicle movement at any time if floodwaters or landslides pose an immediate danger.
Public Safety and Preventive Measures
The District Administration Office has strongly advised the public not to travel unnecessarily, particularly during nighttime hours. Residents living near landslide-prone slopes or riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant and relocate to safer areas if conditions deteriorate.
Local governments have been instructed to relocate flood-prone communities to temporary shelters and ensure that emergency response teams remain on standby. Security forces, local disaster committees, volunteers, and humanitarian organizations have been placed on high alert to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
Road and Infrastructure Readiness
To maintain smooth response operations, the Road Division Bhaktapur and the Suryabinayak–Dhulikhel Road Project have been directed to keep bulldozers, excavators, and loaders ready for immediate deployment in case of road blockages or landslide debris.
The Local Disaster Management Committees and Cluster Leads have also been urged to coordinate with relevant stakeholders and ensure real-time information sharing during the high-risk period.
Administration’s Appeal for Caution
Chief District Officer Umesh Kumar Dhakal emphasized the need for cooperation from all travelers and residents during this period of heavy rainfall. “We request everyone to follow safety protocols, avoid nighttime travel, and remain in contact with local authorities for updates. Your safety is our priority,” he stated.
The BP Highway, connecting Kavre and Sindhuli districts, is a vital route linking Kathmandu Valley to eastern Nepal. Due to frequent monsoon-triggered landslides, it is considered one of the most disaster-sensitive highways in the country.
With the monsoon season still active, authorities continue to monitor weather patterns closely and have assured the public of timely updates regarding road conditions and travel safety.
