Bridging The Gender Gap: Encouraging Girls In STEM Starts

The Girls in Information and Communication Technologies initiative of the International Telecommunication Union is a global effort to increase awareness on empowering and encouraging girls among with young women to consider studies as well as careers in Information and Communication Technologies. The initiative is committed to celebrate and commemorate the International Girls in ICT Day on the fourth Thursday of every April as established by the International Telecommunication Union membership. Since Nepal Telecommunications Authority is a part of this global movement, it organizes various programs targeting the day.

This year Nepal Telecommunications Authority organized various programs among which, Mobile App Development Contest was one. NTA in collaboration with Walt (Women Leaders in Technology) successfully hosted the event with the theme, “Fighting Violence Against Women”- a one day hackathon for girls up to undergraduate level where the TECH REPRESENTATIVES from Women in Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics, Nepal Sangeeta Waiba, Eeda Rijal, and Lalita Kc grabbed the 2nd prize for their mobile application “ForHER”.

The application was designed to educate girls on self-defense techniques from the most used mobile phone itself. Since Nepal is not equipped with various self-defense classes, the team planned to help empower women through their application. The application also has additional features like automatic message generation in the case of an emergency. According to the winning team, they plan to include other features such as hardware inclusion, “Manis harayeko Buchanan,” etc. The application is expected to be launched as soon as its features are completed.

A warm Congratulations to the team for keeping their hard work and dedication to make the effects out of it. And thank you the organizer team for conducting the initiatives nationally. We are proud to be a part of it.
