Building An Cyber Security Awareness Program, Sandeep Shrestha

With successful programs at different colleges and schools including rehabilitation center, on June 26, 2016; CSI Nepal team has organized its awareness campaign at IT-enabled college, Lokanthali, Bhaktapur. The awareness was a successful event with all the participants Samriddhi studying information and technology.
Samriddhi College itself is one of the tops ranked IT Colleges in the nation. Samriddhi College was established 3years earlier and is the first CSIT College in Bhaktapur with BSc.CSIT and BBS.

The cybersecurity team members-Mr. Laxman Bhattarai, Mr. Chiranjibi Adhikari, and Mr. Bikram Khadka presented in the program, where Mr. Laxman Bhattarai started off the presentation showing the basic introduction about websites and web security of both internal and public sites. Mr. Bhattarai said We need to upgrade the security concerns with the increasing use of technology in Nepal. Server security is the most and important matter to have known about for more security and safety while accessing our work via the internet. He even talked about the security threats like SQL Injection which is mostly used the technique in Nepal for web-hacking, DDOS attack and Spamming.

Mr. Chiranjibi Adhikari also presented about the cybersecurity stating awareness and education as the first line of defense. He said, with the evolution of viruses are also evolving.
The cyber threat is high in developed countries with high use of the internet so gaining knowledge and learning the ways to protect ourselves from cyber-crime is a must. CSI Team is here to do awake our nation’s people so that they can be aware and face the challenges cyber-crime may bring in the future.

In the program, the presenter also stated about the condition of Nepal in terms of cyber-crime where 70% of websites in Nepal are open to hacking threats. To avoid these crimes, everyone must have a unique and robust password combination for each account they have been using and not to have similar passwords for every account. The technique of phishing content like malware and bad-ware were also discussed including how keeping our data backup and file storage to prevent it from viruses, even about the significant problems in social media security and the ways to overcome it.

The principal of Samriddhi College, Mr. Sandeep Shrestha thanked all the team members of CSI Nepal for their help and awareness which is one of the crucial matters to be learned about especially for the IT students. He said this campaign would surely help our IT students because they have been studying about cyber-crimes, but the awareness camp with practical illustrations and real-life experiences of victims will encourage them to get involved in finding solutions for cyber-threats.
