To address the growing demand for skilled workers in the job market, IME Group and IXI Corp have jointly established Kathmandu Technical School. The school was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Sarat Singh Bhandari, at a special ceremony held on Tuesday at the school’s premises in Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu.
Kathmandu Technical School will offer training programs in over three dozen employment and self-employment-oriented fields, including hospitality, culinary arts, caregiving, barista training, and bartending.
The school aims to produce more than 100,000 skilled professionals over the next decade.
With a business legacy spanning two and a half decades, IME Group has successfully operated numerous industries and projects across sectors such as banking and finance, insurance, tourism and hospitality, tourism infrastructure, hydropower, and manufacturing.
Currently, IME Group directly employs over 25,000 individuals, while also assisting an equal or greater number of people in becoming self-employed.
IXI Corp is engaged in alternative investment, renewable energy, alternative education, technology, and public policy sectors.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Minister Bhandari emphasized that the combination of skills, employment, entrepreneurship, and capital is essential for solving unemployment and poverty. He stated that the government prioritizes partnerships with the private sector to achieve this goal.
The minister also reiterated that the production of technical manpower is a key government priority and assured support to private sector initiatives in skill development and technical education. He emphasized that skill acquisition is crucial not only for employment and self-employment within Nepal but also for overseas employment opportunities.
President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Chairman of IME Group, Chandra Prasad Dhakal, highlighted that the formal launch of Kathmandu Technical School marks IME Group’s significant step into technical workforce development.
He further expressed confidence that the school would play a crucial role in preparing thousands of young individuals for employment or self-employment. “Established with the vision of ushering in a new era in technical and vocational education in Nepal, this school is expected to make a positive impact on employment, education, society, and the overall economy,” he said.
“We have set a goal of producing over 100,000 skilled professionals in the next decade. To achieve this, the school will offer training in more than three dozen employment and self-employment-oriented fields,” he added.
Dhakal also urged the government to encourage and support the establishment and operation of technical schools and training centers. He pointed out that Nepal’s biggest challenge today is unemployment and youth migration, asserting that skill development is the solution.
“Even if individuals choose to go abroad for work, having the right skills ensures better job opportunities and higher wages. This will also have a positive impact on Nepal’s remittance economy. Our goal is to equip youth with the necessary skills to succeed,” he remarked.
Chairman of Kathmandu Technical School (KTS), Manoj Poudel, stated that the school will contribute to the government’s target of producing 100,000 skilled workers over the next ten years.
He further added that KTS is committed to providing world-class training and education to youth, not just for overseas employment but also to create opportunities within Nepal.
KTS plans to collaborate with local and national industries, businesses, and international partners to ensure its graduates are globally competitive.
The event was attended by representatives from the Nepalese government, private sector, foreign diplomatic missions, donor agencies, and other stakeholders.
