Chairperson, of the Federal Parliament of Nepal National Assembly, Narayan Prasad Dahal, has emphasized the need to ensure equal access to the benefits of science, technology, and innovation, transcending narrow national interests for the greater global good.
Chairperson Dahal Calls For Equal Global Access
Addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Dahal highlighted the crucial role of parliaments worldwide in harnessing technological advancements for societal benefit, while also addressing risks like privacy breaches, cyber security threats, and the spread of harmful content.
Dahal remarked that while science and technology have provided opportunities to enhance and streamline human life, it’s essential for legislatures worldwide to ensure equitable access to technology and its benefits.
He called for effective laws and their implementation to reduce disparities in access to technology both within and between nations.
He pointed out that more than 2.5 billion people still lack access to information technology, stressing the urgent need to bridge this gap.
Dahal also praised the IPU’s initiative to include Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its agenda, as well as its efforts to form working groups and create ethical frameworks for the use of science and technology.
Additionally, Dahal called for policy exchanges and best practices between developed and developing countries to narrow the technological gap. He reiterated Nepal’s commitment to its foreign policy of “friendship with all, enmity with none” and reaffirmed Nepal’s adherence to the principles of peace, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.
He also thanked the international community for supporting Nepal’s peace process and urged for more financial and technological assistance to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, particularly on Nepal’s Himalayan region, including Mount Everest.
Chairperson Dahal concluded by expressing confidence in the IPU’s role in promoting global peace and security, while Nepal remains committed to supporting its objectives.
