Nepal Chamber Of Commerce Demands Rasuwagadhi Flood Action: Friendship Bridge Destroyed, Trade Halted

The Nepal Chamber of Commerce has reported that the severe rainfall that occurred last Tuesday in the Timure area of the Rasuwagadhi border, a major Nepal-China crossing point, has caused significant human and material damage.

The heavy rains led to flooding that completely washed away the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge, and the closure of Rasuwagadhi, the main trade route with China, has put businessmen in distress. According to the Chamber, many container vehicles carrying goods toward Nepal were swept away by the flood, causing serious losses to trade and business.
In a statement issued by the Chamber, it said, “The flood that hit last Tuesday caused extensive human and material damage. We urge the government to intensify search efforts for the missing and to accelerate the reconstruction of physical infrastructure to promptly reopen this important trade route.”
The Chamber also drew the government’s attention to the need for immediate relief arrangements in the Timure area of Rasuwagadhi, along with long-term structural development, construction of an alternative bridge, and technical preparations.
The Chamber warned that the closure of this key trade point with China could severely impact imports and exports. Therefore, it has urged the government to make policy decisions for permanent structures and alternative border management to provide long-term solutions to such risky situations.
