A major road upgrade has taken place in Chitwan. The 6-lane road from Gondrang to Pulchowk along the East-West Highway is now officially open.
Chitwan 6 Lane Highway Opens
On Friday afternoon, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh, Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Devendra Dahal, and Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal jointly inaugurated the project. After the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, the road was opened to the public.
Completed with Modern Features
The road expansion covers 6.08 kilometers and follows Asian highway standards. It was built by Sagoon Construction Pvt. Ltd. The project cost was NPR 1.12 billion. Construction work ended on 12 January. The completed road was then handed over to the Road Division Office, Bharatpur.
The road now features:
11.5 meters of pavement on each side.
A 3 to 4-meter green median in the center.
Footpaths of up to 4 meters wide on both sides.
Service lanes on both ends, measuring 5.5 to 6 meters.
Smart street lighting, with 600 lights installed.
Underground power lines for a clean look and safety.
A complete drainage system to manage water flow.
Drainage and Safety Upgrades
To prevent flooding, engineers created new drainage channels. Water from the Chowbiskothi to Bharatpur, down slope, now flows into the Pungi River. Water from Chowbiskothi to the bus park is diverted to the Kerunga stream.
Wider, Safer, Smarter
This area previously had only a 2-lane road. The expansion added four main lanes and a service lane on each side, creating a full 6-lane setup. The 50-meter-wide road supports higher traffic volume and better safety.
The project also includes:
Dubo grass and flower plantations in the median.
Decorative lighting for visual appeal.
Space for pedestrians and cyclists.
Laid the Foundation in 2021
Prime Minister Oli laid the foundation stone on Magh 27, 2077 (February 9, 2021). Since then, the government has prioritized expanding key highways. This road supports Bharatpur’s growing needs and strengthens regional transport links.
Boost for Local Mobility
The new road improves travel in Bharatpur and the surrounding areas. It helps reduce traffic congestion, makes commutes faster, and supports local trade. Residents and businesses along the highway will now benefit from better access and infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
The success of this project sets an example for future upgrades across Nepal’s highways. With better roads, the country can improve logistics, tourism, and safety.
Chitwan’s 6-lane section is now a symbol of modern, urban-friendly infrastructure. It shows how smart design and timely construction can transform local connectivity. The road is more than just concrete—it represents progress and public service in motion.
