With his extensive experience in banking and insurance, Chapagain is expected to bring valuable expertise to NEPSE’s leadership.
Before this appointment, Chapagain worked as the Deputy General Manager at Sanima Reliance Life Insurance. He has spent many years in the banking sector, gaining a deep understanding of financial markets and corporate management. His experience makes him well-qualified to lead NEPSE through its ongoing developments.
The appointment of Chapagain fills the vacancy left in the CEO position since February 7, 2025. Before this, Narad Kumar Luitel was selected for the position, but his appointment was canceled due to qualification concerns. Luitel’s name had been recommended, but the decision was not certified by the Chief Secretary, which led to the cancellation.
Selection Process and Evaluation
A selection committee had shortlisted five candidates for the CEO role. These included Chapagain, Luitel, Purnaprasad Acharya, Badri Prasad Pyakurel, and Hemant Basyal. The candidates were asked to present business plans and undergo interviews on March 19, 2025. After careful evaluation, the committee chose Chapagain for his skills and qualifications.
Chapagain’s experience in the banking and insurance sectors is considered an asset for the growth of NEPSE. His leadership is expected to bring new strategies and improvements to the stock exchange, ensuring better market operations and transparency.
Official Appointment
Following his selection, Chapagain was formally given his appointment letter by Revenue Secretary Dinesh Kumar Ghimire on Tuesday at the Ministry of Finance. His appointment ends a two-month leadership gap at NEPSE. This period of uncertainty affected the exchange’s ability to operate efficiently, but Chapagain’s arrival is expected to resolve these challenges.
Previous Controversies
The initial choice of Narad Kumar Luitel had sparked criticism. Luitel, a prominent tourism entrepreneur, lacked direct experience in financial markets, making him a controversial pick. As a result, the Cabinet rescinded his appointment, ultimately choosing Chapagain instead.
Chapagain’s solid background in financial services has reassured stakeholders that NEPSE is in capable hands. His experience with institutions like Sanima Bank and Sanima Reliance Life Insurance has prepared him for the demands of managing Nepal’s stock exchange.
Future Prospects
With Chapagain at the helm, NEPSE is expected to focus on several key areas. These include enhancing market liquidity, boosting investor confidence, and improving the infrastructure needed for sustained growth. Chapagain’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges of a rapidly evolving financial landscape in Nepal.
His appointment comes at a critical time for NEPSE. As the stock market continues to grow, Chapagain’s leadership will guide the exchange through this period of transformation. His track record in the banking and insurance sectors makes him a strong candidate to steer NEPSE toward further development and success.
The financial community is now looking forward to the changes Chapagain will bring to NEPSE. His leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of Nepal’s capital market and strengthening the overall economy.
