The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has issued a warning to the public about a rising number of cyberattacks targeting bank customers. Fraudsters are using deceptive tactics to steal people’s money.
CIB Alerts Bank Customers scam
These criminals often pose as bank employees and call people, pretending to be from the bank. They try to trick people into sharing sensitive information like account numbers, passwords, and one-time passwords (OTPs).
The CIB warns people not to share personal information with strangers who call them. Report suspicious calls to your bank or the police.
SP Hobindra Bogati of the Bureau stated that providing details for ‘account renewal and update’ could be risky as hackers and fraudsters might use this opportunity to transfer funds.
To protect yourself from these cyberattacks, the CIB advises people to follow these tips:
- Never share personal information with anyone over the phone. Even if the caller claims to be from your bank, do not share your account details, passwords, or OTPs.
- Verify the caller’s identity. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from your bank, call your bank’s official number to confirm their identity.
- Be cautious of phishing attacks. Phishing attacks are fake emails or messages that look like they’re from a legitimate source, like your bank. Don’t click on links or download attachments from suspicious emails or messages.
- Keep your device and software up-to-date. Regularly update your device’s operating system and install security software to protect yourself from malware and other cyber threats.
- Report suspicious activity. If you receive a suspicious call, email, or text message, report it to your bank and the police immediately.
By following these simple tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime. Stay vigilant and protect your hard-earned money.
