In a significant step toward improving respiratory care in Nepal, global pharmaceutical company Cipla has partnered with the Nepal Respiratory Society to launch “BreatheFree 90”, a 90-day AI-powered program designed to support asthma and respiratory patients in using their inhalers regularly.

AI to Remind Patients to Use Inhalers on Time

The BreatheFree 90 program uses artificial intelligence (AI) to send daily reminders through WhatsApp, helping patients stick to their prescribed inhaler schedules. It aims to tackle a common challenge in respiratory care: poor treatment adherence, which often leads to worsening health outcomes.

This initiative is particularly relevant as air pollution continues to rise in Nepal, contributing to a growing number of respiratory cases. Data shows that around 50,000 people in Nepal die each year from pollution-related illnesses.

Addressing Asthma and Chronic Respiratory Diseases in Nepal

Nepal is witnessing a sharp increase in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While inhalers are an effective treatment option, many patients either forget or skip their doses. This leads to complications and a lower quality of life.

Through BreatheFree 90, enrolled patients will receive simple, easy-to-understand messages daily that guide them on inhaler use and disease management tips, making the program user-friendly for all age groups.

Digital Health Innovation Through WhatsApp and QR Codes

Patients can enroll in the program by scanning a QR code available at participating clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies. Once registered, they will receive personalized AI-generated content, including reminders and health education materials, directly to their WhatsApp accounts.

The use of familiar technology like WhatsApp ensures wide accessibility and ease of use, even in rural or resource-limited areas.

Cipla’s Commitment to Respiratory Health

Swapnil Malpani, Head of Emerging Markets and Europe at Cipla, highlighted the company’s mission to enhance lives through digital innovation. “We are committed to helping people live better with chronic respiratory diseases. BreatheFree 90 is a major milestone in making healthcare more accessible and effective,” he said.

Nepal Respiratory Society to Promote the Initiative Nationwide

The Nepal Respiratory Society will support the nationwide implementation of BreatheFree 90 by promoting it among healthcare professionals and ensuring integration at the clinical level. The collaboration is expected to boost awareness, adherence, and education regarding respiratory care in Nepal.

A Step Toward Better Respiratory Health in Nepal

As air quality continues to decline, initiatives like BreatheFree 90 are seen as timely and essential. The program has the potential to positively impact thousands of Nepali patients by improving their treatment outcomes and raising awareness about the importance of consistent inhaler use.

With AI-driven digital health tools, Cipla and the Nepal Respiratory Society aim to reduce the burden of respiratory diseases and create a healthier future for Nepal.
