Nepal’s most awaited festival, has officially begun. With it, thousands of people are leaving Kathmandu for their hometowns, eager to reunite with families and celebrate together.

The streets may not yet fully reflect the festive mood, but bus parks and travel centers are already bustling with activity.
Joy of Returning Home
For many who have made Kathmandu their second home due to work or study, Dashain is a rare chance to return to their roots. Travelers can be seen carrying large bags or holding children, with faces lit up by the hope of celebrating with loved ones.
Travel Worries: Roads, Delays, and Fares
Despite the excitement, many passengers expressed concerns. Poor road conditions, frequent landslide reports, and fare hikes have dampened the festive spirit.
Narendra Joshi, a regular Dashain traveler, noticed a smaller crowd this year. “In previous years, it was impossible to even walk at the bus park. This time, it’s less crowded, probably because many students and workers left early due to closures. At least tickets are easier to get now,” he said. However, he also warned about traffic jams and advised carrying water and snacks.
Deepak Bahadur Khatri, heading to Dhangadhi, complained about delays. “Ticket prices are around Rs. 2,800–2,900 this year. Fares rise every Dashain, but what worries me more are poor road conditions. We expect better management from the new government,” he added.
Anita Chaudhary, a student traveling to Kailali, pointed out how fare hikes directly affect students. “Prices are higher this year, which is unfair for us. Unfortunately, fare hikes are common during Dashain,” she said.
Prakash Joshi shared mixed feelings: “Ticket management is easier, and crowds are smaller. But fares are still high, and landslides at Narayangadh and Muglin have stranded many passengers. The government must repair roads in time to ensure safe travel.”
A Test of Patience for Passengers
While Dashain symbolizes joy and family reunions, travelers also face stress due to high fares, long delays, and unsafe roads. Many hope the government will prioritize safe journeys, fair prices, and timely road maintenance during the biggest travel season of the year.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, between 1.5 and 1.8 million people are expected to leave the capital this Dashain. If weather conditions remain favorable, the number could reach the higher end of the estimate.
