In Kathmandu, on Sunday, Madan Bhandari University hosted an international conference aimed at establishing a world-class institution to meet Nepal’s growing demand for practical education.

International Experts Discuss Practical Education
Richard Miller, founding president of Olin College of Engineering in Boston, emphasized the importance of investing in practical education. He explained that such investments were the real foundation of education.
Miller also expressed his commitment to supporting Nepal’s technical universities. He stressed that a collaborative approach from the government, policymakers, universities, and society would be essential in producing quality human resources.
Bruce Fleisner, former Vice President of the American University in Cairo, highlighted the potential for technical universities in Nepal. He encouraged investors to support Madan Bhandari University, pointing out that practical education is crucial for everyday life. Fleisner urged investors to approach the project with enthusiasm, recognizing its potential to transform Nepal’s education landscape.
Insights from Singapore’s Success
Siram Ramakrishna, former Vice President of the National University of Singapore, shared Singapore’s success story. He explained that Singapore’s university achieved global recognition in 25 years by setting clear goals. Ramakrishna expressed confidence that Nepal could follow a similar path, provided it focused on quality education. He also mentioned that Madan Bhandari University could become a top global institution if it prioritized service and excellence in education.
Focus on Practical Education and Research
Kenichi Ohashi, former World Bank Director for Nepal, shared his views on improving productivity. He emphasized that Nepal’s policies should be technology-friendly, practical, and inclusive.
Ohashi stated that students with the right skills could play a key role in implementing these policies. According to him, focused policies and the right educational frameworks could lead to significant growth for Nepal.
Madan Bhandari University’s Role
Madan Bhandari University President Dr. Rajendra Dhwaj Joshi discussed the university’s responsibility in establishing itself as a world-class institution. He acknowledged the importance of international partnerships to achieve this goal.
The university is currently engaged in research and production of mushrooms, kiwi, and organic vegetables. Additionally, it focuses on fields like artificial intelligence, agriculture, and technology. These initiatives have attracted attention from global research organizations.
The university is committed to producing graduates who can create jobs, not just seek them. This approach aligns with the broader vision of contributing to Nepal’s economic development by fostering entrepreneurship.
Government’s Role and Support
Former Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel praised the establishment of Madan Bhandari University, calling it a significant advancement for Nepal’s higher education. He emphasized the role of specialized universities in fields like technology, health, and open education.
Pokharel noted that graduates from these institutions would drive the nation’s development. He also stressed the need for new universities that could address challenges that traditional institutions cannot.
Memorandum of Understanding Signed
During the conference, Om Krishna Shrestha, Director of Eris Mushroom Farm, and Dr. Rajendra Dhwaj Joshi signed a memorandum of understanding. Shrestha shared his experience of the difficulties faced while setting up the farm due to a lack of research skills. However, he highlighted that the farm is now successful and pledged to assist students in gaining practical research experience in mushroom production.
