Dhulikhel Hospital’s Groundbreaking Trauma Center: $30M Japan-Backed Facility for Nepal
28th Myay 2025, Kathmandu
A major step forward in Nepal’s healthcare sector took place today with the laying of the foundation stone for a Trauma and Emergency Center at Dhulikhel Hospital, under the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences. The new center will provide advanced emergency and trauma care to thousands.
Dhulikhel Hospital’s Trauma Center
The ceremony brought together top leaders, healthcare professionals, and community members. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Health Minister Pradip Paudel, and Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle led the event. They were joined by Prof. Dr. Ram KM Shrestha, the founding executive director of Dhulikhel Hospital.
Japan Backs One Of Nepal’s Largest Health Projects
The project will cost nearly USD 30 million (NPR 3.22 billion). The Government of Japan is supporting it through a partnership agreement signed today. The hospital and its Japanese implementing partners sealed the deal under the Ministry of Health and Population.
This center will be one of Nepal’s biggest health infrastructure efforts. It will enhance Nepal’s emergency response and trauma care system. More importantly, it aims to reach beyond the Kavre district and help people across central Nepal.
Dr. Ram Shrestha’s Emotional Tribute To The Community
In a moving speech, Prof. Dr. Ram KM Shrestha thanked the local people. He reminded everyone that without the community’s support, the hospital wouldn’t be where it is today.
He said, “If the community had not believed in us and donated land, this hospital wouldn’t have reached where it is today.” His words received heartfelt applause from the audience.
Dr. Shrestha has long championed “quality healthcare for all.” His mission continues to guide Dhulikhel Hospital’s growth. The new center is a natural extension of that vision.
KU And Dhulikhel Hospital: A Strong Academic-Healthcare Partnership
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle highlighted the partnership between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. He emphasized how education and service go hand-in-hand. Their collaboration is building a future where both students and patients benefit.
“This facility shows what we can achieve through teamwork,” said Dr. Wagle. “It will boost not just healthcare, but also medical learning and emergency training.”
National Leaders Call It A Game-Changer
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called the project a “milestone” in emergency healthcare. He said Nepal needs modern emergency services, especially in areas prone to disasters and road accidents.
He praised Japan’s role and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving health services nationwide. “This center will be a beacon of hope and readiness,” said Oli.
Health Minister Pradip Paudel echoed the PM’s words. He said the center will be vital for both day-to-day emergencies and large-scale disasters. “We are investing in a safer, healthier Nepal,” he added.
Advanced Facilities For Emergency, Trauma, And Disaster Response
The Trauma and Emergency Center will feature cutting-edge medical equipment, trained staff, and integrated systems for faster emergency response. It will handle trauma, surgeries, and disaster-related injuries. A well-equipped ICU and diagnostic units will also be part of the facility.
The project includes space for training doctors, nurses, and first responders. It will play a key role in building Nepal’s capacity to handle emergencies with speed and efficiency.
Reaching The Unreachable
Although based in Kavre, the center will serve a much wider population. Remote and underserved regions will benefit, especially during natural disasters or large-scale accidents.
The hospital already serves thousands every year. With this expansion, it aims to cut down emergency referral delays and provide care when it’s most needed.
A Legacy Of Community Health And Vision
The foundation stone marks more than just construction—it celebrates a legacy of community healthcare. Dhulikhel Hospital has always worked closely with the people. It offers affordable care, trains young professionals, and reaches the poor.
Today’s event is a reminder of how far this partnership has come. And with Japan’s help, the future looks stronger.
A Message Of Hope And Dedication
As the sun set over Dhulikhel, the air was filled with hope. The speeches, the handshakes, and the ceremony all reflected one thing: commitment.
A commitment to save lives. A commitment to bring healthcare closer to the people. A commitment to keep growing, learning, and serving.
With the foundation stone now laid, construction will soon begin. And when complete, the Trauma and Emergency Center at Dhulikhel Hospital will stand as a symbol of resilience, partnership, and progress.
