From its modest beginnings as a 40-bed facility, the hospital has transformed into the nation’s premier central referral maternity hospital, now boasting 489 beds and a legacy of dedicated service.
This milestone not only commemorates its rich history but also highlights its significant strides in modernizing services and infrastructure to meet the evolving healthcare needs of women and newborns across the country.
A Legacy Born from Compassion
Founded on August 17, 1959, the hospital’s origin is rooted in a mission of care. Originally named in memory of Crown Princess Indra Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah, who passed away during childbirth, the institution was a visionary initiative by Paropakar Sansthan.
This legacy of compassion continues to drive the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to approximately 15,000 birthing mothers annually.
Driving Innovation in Women’s Healthcare
In the past year alone, the hospital has implemented a series of transformative upgrades. Director Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari highlights key achievements, including the introduction of an online ticketing system to streamline patient experience and the expansion of the Kupondole Service & Research Building, which offers a broader range of services from safe abortion and family planning to pathology and radiology.
Further solidifying its role as a leader in medical innovation, the hospital has introduced Nepal’s first neonatal screening for genetic and congenital disorders, a vital step in ensuring the long-term health of newborns.
The expansion of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to 20 beds and the launch of Maternal & Fetal Echo services underscore its dedication to providing advanced, life-saving care.
A Holistic Approach to Maternal and Newborn Health
Recognizing that healthcare extends beyond physical well-being, the hospital has also pioneered a Mental Health OPD for pregnant and postpartum women.
This service addresses the often-overlooked psychological challenges faced by new and expecting mothers, offering a much-needed layer of support.
Additionally, the hospital’s commitment to training and development is evident in its advanced simulation lab.
This facility provides a safe and controlled environment for healthcare professionals to hone their skills, ensuring that the next generation of doctors and nurses are equipped to handle complex medical scenarios with confidence and expertise.
With a master plan in motion to modernize its infrastructure and services, Paropakar Maternity & Women’s Hospital is not just celebrating the past; it’s actively shaping the future of women’s and newborn healthcare in Nepal, aiming to set new benchmarks for quality and accessibility for all.
Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari Achievements: How He Transformed Paropakar Maternity Hospital as Director
In just two years, Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari has transformed Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, implementing a series of strategic improvements that have significantly enhanced patient care, expanded critical services, and modernized its facilities. His leadership has brought about remarkable achievements, making the hospital a pioneer in maternal and child healthcare in Nepal.
Boosting Patient Accessibility and Convenience
Dr. Adhikari’s priority was to streamline patient services. Under his direction, the hospital introduced online ticketing and added four new counters—two for OPD, one for billing, and a new pharmacy counter—to drastically reduce long waiting times. This focus on efficiency has made the hospital more user-friendly for thousands of Nepalese families.
Pioneering Medical Innovations
A major part of Dr. Adhikari’s vision was to introduce advanced medical services. The hospital has become a leader in reproductive health with the expansion of its services at the new Kupandol building, operational since June 29, 2024 (2081.3.15 BS). It now offers comprehensive infertility treatments, including IVF and IUI services, which have already served 9,100 patients.
Furthermore, the hospital is the first government facility in Nepal to offer free obstetric fistula surgery, providing life-changing treatment for women affected by complicated childbirth.
Investing in Training and Technology
Dr. Adhikari has prioritized the development of skilled healthcare professionals. The inauguration of a state-of-the-art simulation lab is a testament to this commitment. This lab allows for risk-free practical training for staff, ensuring the highest standards of maternal and neonatal care without impacting patients.
Holistic and Accessible Care
Under his leadership, the hospital has expanded its care to be more holistic and accessible. It now offers mental health OPD services for pregnant and postpartum women and has doubled its NICU capacity to 20 beds to prevent external referrals for critically ill newborns. Other improvements include in-house maternal and fetal echo services, the addition of four new Birthing Suites, and extended service hours to accommodate more patients.
Dr. Adhikari’s tenure has not only enhanced the hospital’s infrastructure but also its capacity to deliver compassionate, high-quality, and accessible healthcare. His leadership is a beacon of progress in Nepal’s public health sector.
About Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital
Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, widely known as Prasuti Griha, is Nepal’s first and foremost maternity hospital. Originally starting with limited facilities, it has expanded over the decades and now operates with 415 beds, serving as a central referral hospital for maternity and women’s health services. Each year, approximately 15,000 women give birth here, making it one of the busiest maternity centers in Nepal.
The hospital was founded by Paropakar Sansthan, a non-governmental organization, under the leadership of Daya Bir Singh Kansakar. It was established on the grounds of Charburja Palace and was named by the late King Mahendra, then Crown Prince, as Paropakar Shree Panch Indra Rajya Lakshmi Maternity Hospital.
The name honored the memory of Crown Princess Indra Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah, who passed away after childbirth. Over the years, the hospital has become synonymous with compassionate and quality maternal care. On 2 December 2007, it was officially renamed Paropakar Maternity & Women’s Hospital, reflecting its expanded services for women’s health beyond maternity care.
