On the auspicious occasion of International Girls in ICT Day. Open Knowledge Foundation Nepal and Wikimedia Nepal organized wiki edition for girls in Sunway International Business School on 25th April 2013, 25 girls were participated and did some Wiki edit things.
To help inspire girls to adopt technology in their career and create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider jobs in the growing field of ICT, International Girls’ in ICT Day is an initiative backed by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Member States in Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Guadalajara, 2010).
International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year. The first time it was dedicated in 2010. Well, this time, we decided to do this event in a brief time, we planned to do this event in college, where we could get a computer lab and a useful bandwidth of the internet.
Saroj Dhakal from Wikimedia Nepal started the program with an introduction of Wikimedia Nepal, Wikipedia, global perspective and local status. Krish Dulal, a top contributor on Nepali Wikipedia, shared what makes him motivated to doing so, Shrijana and Naviya from Wikiwomen Initiative of Nepal presented about the Wikiwomen and how this works, they inspired them to join the battle of girls to write the women/girls related contents in Wikipedia.
And finally, Prakash Neupane from Open Knowledge Foundation Nepal presented the story of Kat Braybrooke how open data made her smile and explained what open knowledge foundation network, open data, open definition, projects and the way for engaging is. Prakash also emphasized the idea behind the Girls In ICT Day and trying to motivate them to make a career in the global trends of ICT.
After this presentation, the work started, girls with machine began to register for new accounts, oops, the IP restricted only for six new accounts and rest had done through the guest session. They just started with what they want to read, if it was there then began to edit and if not then started to make new one… few have successfully made some original articles, and few edits are existing one. We saw the excitement in their face, seems they were happy to make this and commitment to doing this in coming days too.
The event was conducted for 3.5 hours. In these hours, the girls who were not ever heard about open data and open content are convinced to this term and ready for contributing. So this is the excellent initiation and experience to enroll girls in it, and this movement will continue….
At the same day, Nepal Telecom Authority was also celebrated and organized another event.
