A staggering total of 2,337 electric vehicles crossed the border through this vital trade gateway, representing a cumulative value of Rs 1.64 billion. This significant influx also generated a substantial Rs 1.80 billion in customs revenue for the government, highlighting the economic as well as environmental benefits of this green shift.
While this data paints a promising picture for Nepal’s cleaner energy future, it’s important to note, as Deepak Lamichhane, Chief Customs Administrator at Birgunj, clarified, that fuel-powered vehicles still currently outnumber electric ones in overall import volumes at Birgunj. However, the consistent upward trend in EV adoption strongly indicates a changing consumer preference and a growing commitment to eco-friendly transportation solutions across the nation.
The Growing Momentum: EV Categories and Values
The breakdown of EV imports through Birgunj showcases a diverse range of electric vehicles making their way into Nepal, catering to various consumer needs and preferences.
During the fiscal year, a notable 16 units of electric jeeps, cars, and vans were imported, boasting a collective value of Rs 120.6 million. These larger electric passenger vehicles contributed Rs 197.4 million in revenue, signaling a growing interest in more substantial clean energy alternatives among Nepali consumers.
Further insights into the power capacity of these imports reveal a balanced distribution across different segments:
- 50 EVs (comprising jeeps, cars, and vans) in the 51 kW to 100 kW category were imported, valued at Rs 130.4 million. This segment is often popular for mid-range performance and practicality.
- 36 EVs within the 101 kW to 200 kW range accounted for Rs 248 million in imports, suggesting a market for more powerful and premium electric vehicles.
- 16 EVs in the higher 201 kW to 300 kW category were also imported, with a combined value of Rs 120.6 million, indicating an emerging demand for high-performance electric options.
Two-Wheelers Lead the Charge: A Snapshot of Urban Mobility

A remarkable 1,821 electric motorcycles were imported via this checkpoint, accumulating a total value of Rs 430.2 million. Lamichhane emphasized that while the import of larger EVs is steadily gaining pace, price sensitivity and existing infrastructure limitations remain crucial factors influencing purchasing decisions in Nepal. Electric motorcycles and scooters, being relatively more accessible in terms of cost and simpler to maintain, are experiencing rapid adoption, becoming a key driver of Nepal’s electric mobility revolution.
