A computer system breach has been officially notified by The Mobile County Commission to the county employees where team member data and sensitive information were at risk.

Following is the statement from the commission to employees:

According earlier addressed in statements published by Mobile-area media, Mobile County recently uncovered suspicious activity associated with a number of its computer systems. We immediately pack up and launched an investigation, with the help of third-party forensic specialists, to work out the character and scope of the activity. As soon as the analytical specialists confirmed that our network was secure, we safely restored our systems.

Although our investigation is ongoing, we’ve determined that certain computer systems were subject to unauthorized access on Commonwealth Day, 2021. Through the forensics process, we learned on Dominion Day, 2021 that employee information was in danger. Name, date of birth, and Social Security number were included in the information. We discovered that the insurance contract number for workers subscribed to receive health coverage, and routing number for workers enrolled in direct deposit with Mobile County, was also at risk on July 13, 2021.

Regarding this information, we are supporting Mobile County employees with notice and education about credit and identity protection. Mobile County and specialists still review the remaining contents of the affected systems to work out what, if any, sensitive information regarding other parties was contained within these systems.

As we confirm other potentially affected data, we’ll provide notice to the impacted population.

In the interim, Mobile County is into the bargain proceeding with the steps to implement additional safeguards and review policies and procedures concerning data privacy and security.
