Nepal Telecom Directed to Enhance Service Quality and Launch NT Fiber Student Offer
Expand Telecom Services
9th November 2025, Kathmandu
Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Jagdish Kharel, has directed Nepal Telecom (NT) to significantly expand telecom services beyond urban centers and establish itself as a company defined by good governance and quality service.
Expand Telecom Services
This mandate was delivered during the inspection of NT’s ‘Integrated Network Operation Center’ in Jawalakhel and the launch of the special NT Fiber Student Offer.
The Minister emphasized that the government’s goal is to ensure fiber and telephone services reach even the remotest settlements, making digital access a fundamental right for all citizens, especially students.
The focus keyphrase, expand telecom services, is central to this vision, appearing right here in the first paragraph.
Minister Kharel’s Directives: Quality, Governance, and Accountability
Minister Kharel stressed that while NT is the nation’s communication backbone, its service quality must be impeccable. He issued a stern warning against delays, instructing NT to immediately terminate contracts with non-performing contractors who are holding up essential infrastructure projects like tower installations.
“The first priority of this government is election and good governance,” Minister Kharel stated. “Therefore, NT’s services must now be viewed through the lens of good governance.
Efforts must be made to maintain good governance and control corruption. NT must establish itself as a company characterized by good governance.”
He further underscored the need for quality communication in government offices, noting complaints about ineffective telephone and internet services even within the Ministry. NT must focus on improving service quality and expanding telecom reach in these difficult-to-access areas.
Prioritizing Service Over Profit
Radhika Aryal, Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and Chairperson of the NT Board, echoed the sentiment of prioritizing national service.
She highlighted that NT, as the Rashtrako Sanchar (Nation’s Communication), prioritizes service delivery over pure profit. However, she stressed that while service is paramount, NT must also identify revenue generation opportunities to boost income and achieve a balance between social responsibility and financial growth.
Sabina Maskey, Acting Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, affirmed that the company is actively implementing various plans to enhance profitability and make services more efficient and effective.
A Digital Leap for Students: The NT Fiber Student Offer
Recognizing the need to improve digital access for the student community, Nepal Telecom officially launched the NT Fiber Student Offer.
This affordable package aims to provide high-quality internet to students born in 2054 BS (1997 AD) or later, thereby supporting their educational and informational needs.
Minister Kharel praised NT for this initiative, acknowledging that it is a special gift to the economically less privileged student demographic, enabling their access to information technology.
“Discussions were held on whether a service could be provided as a gift to the Gen Z and students by the government formed on the foundation of the Gen Z movement,” Minister Kharel commented. “Today, this subsidized package has been announced. For the millions of students, internet access is as essential as breathing.”
