FNCCI Inspects Damaged Properties
The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has conducted an on-site inspection of private sector properties that were damaged during the protests on September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23 and 24). The inspection team, led by FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal, visited a number of sites in Kathmandu, including Hotel Hilton, Kantipur Media Group, Golchha Group facilities, and Bhatbhateni Supermarket. The purpose of this visit was to assess the extent of the damage and to directly address the concerns of the affected business owners.
FNCCI’s Demands and Condemnation
During the inspection, President Dhakal condemned the attacks on private property as “deeply regrettable,” emphasizing that such incidents not only cause significant financial losses but also severely damage investor confidence and the overall business climate of the country. He stressed that a secure environment for private investment is a crucial national priority and a fundamental responsibility of the state.
To address these concerns and to support the affected businesses, the FNCCI has put forth several demands to the government:
- Immediate action against the perpetrators of the violence: The FNCCI has called for the swift and decisive prosecution of those responsible for the destruction of private property.
- Fair compensation for affected businesses: The federation is urging the government to provide fair and timely financial relief to help businesses recover from their losses.
- Strong preventative measures: The FNCCI has demanded that the government implement effective strategies to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, ensuring the long-term security of private assets.
The FNCCI’s inspection and subsequent demands reflect a proactive stance by the private sector in response to the recent unrest. The delegation also included key FNCCI members, such as Immediate Past President Shekhar Golchha and Senior Vice President Anjan Shrestha, demonstrating a unified front. The private sector is a key engine of Nepal’s economy, contributing over 81% to the GDP and generating more than 86% of jobs. Therefore, safeguarding its interests is crucial for the country’s overall economic health.
The Private Sector’s Resilience and Commitment to Rebuilding
Despite suffering significant losses, Nepal’s private sector has shown remarkable resilience and a strong commitment to working with the government to rebuild the economy. The inspection by the FNCCI is a tangible example of this commitment. By taking a direct approach to assessing the damage, the FNCCI is not only gathering data for its compensation claims but also sending a message of solidarity to its members. The federation has stated that it is dedicated to protecting entrepreneurs, restoring business confidence, and collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and security. This is not just a call for government action, but a public pledge by the private sector to play its part in the nation’s recovery.
The FNCCI’s efforts are part of a broader, ongoing dialogue between the private sector and the government. As the government, led by the new Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal, works to implement an “Integrated Trade Revival Plan” and considers tax relief measures, the private sector’s direct input from this inspection will be invaluable. The collaboration between these two entities is essential for creating a stable, predictable, and investor-friendly environment. By providing a clear account of the damages and a list of actionable demands, the FNCCI is helping to chart a course for a swift and sustainable economic recovery for Nepal.
