Speaking at the 18th Annual General Assembly and Charter Day celebration of the Honorary Consular Corps Nepal (HCCN) in Kathmandu, Minister Rana emphasized their pivotal role in enhancing Nepal’s international relations.
Minister Rana highlighted that Honorary Consuls are vital in promoting economic, educational, cultural, and grassroots-level ties with the countries they represent.
“In today’s global landscape, bilateral cooperation and partnerships must be promoted for shared prosperity,” she stated. “Your contributions in trade promotion, attracting foreign investment, ensuring market access, and promoting Nepal’s international image are indispensable.”
Chandra Prasad Dhakal, the outgoing Dean of HCCN, echoed these sentiments, affirming that Honorary Consuls are far more than just ceremonial figures; they are active and dedicated partners in Nepal’s economic diplomacy. “We have moved beyond formality and are contributing to Nepal’s diplomacy and development with capability, action, and dedication,” Dhakal asserted, stressing that “in today’s globalized era, economic diplomacy is not an option but a necessity.”
Dhakal, who also serves as Chairman of the IME Group and President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), reaffirmed HCCN’s commitment to national interests.
He announced preparations for Nepal’s first-ever economic summit, a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, poised to further national development. Reflecting on a recent joint workshop in Chandragiri, Kathmandu, Dhakal noted the significant potential for Honorary Consuls to facilitate foreign investment, innovation, trade, tourism, and engagement with the influential Non-Resident Nepalese (NRN) community.
Former UN Assistant Secretary-General Gyan Chandra Acharya also delivered a special address, reinforcing the critical importance of Honorary Consuls in elevating Nepal’s unique presence on the global stage and navigating the complexities of evolving international development dynamics.
During the ceremony, Dhakal formally passed on the leadership of HCCN to Bhola Bikram Thapa, the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria to Nepal. The event saw the attendance of senior government officials, diplomats, and numerous Honorary Consuls, signifying the collective commitment to strengthening Nepal’s global outreach.
