Rakesh’s brother, Rajesh Mahto, shared that doctors have confirmed the likelihood of permanent paralysis, leaving the family struggling with both medical and financial burdens. Rakesh had been living in Kathmandu for his studies and was preparing for government civil service exams at the time of the incident.

“We kept my brother in Kathmandu for his education. He was preparing for government exams. Because of the gunshot wound, he can no longer walk. Our mother is also unwell, and I am the sole earning member. Managing both his and our mother’s treatment has become extremely difficult,” Rajesh told Nepal News Bank.

Family Appeals for Justice

Rajesh expressed frustration at the lack of accountability for the shooting, stating:

“Those who ordered the attack must face justice. Families who lost their loved ones and individuals who were injured and permanently disabled should receive government jobs and support.”

The family also noted that despite buying a goat to celebrate Vijaya Dashami, they were unable to celebrate due to Rakesh’s critical condition.

Medical Condition of Rakesh Mahto

While Rakesh’s general condition remains stable, mobility in both legs is severely compromised. Doctors have indicated that further treatment may not restore walking ability, highlighting the long-term impact of the incident.

Call for Government Support and Public Awareness

This incident has raised concerns about protester safety, law enforcement accountability, and support for victims of political violence. Families of injured citizens are calling for financial, medical, and employment support, as well as stricter legal action against those responsible for ordering violence.
