Share It On:

I guess many of us would know about Linux, a free operating system and I feel excited to tell you that it has become 25 years old of being popularity since its birth on August 25, 1991, by a Finnish Programmer Linus Torvalds. So now also on August 25, 2016, 25th birthday of Linux was celebrated throughout the world.

Linux is one of the largest shared and the most widely ported free operating system kernels, which runs on a vast range of systems from computers to smartwatches and gas pumps, and also runs on most of the websites from big to small and professional to personal. So, Linux is everywhere. When you search on Google, you use Linux; when you buy metro tickets, you use Linux; Linux powers even your wifi router; not only this, all your smart devices, your android phone and tablet all are powered by Linux. So download and use it since the entire internet is powered by Linux.

Linux is a version of the UNIX operating system, developed by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie in 1969. And there are a large number of lists of Linux Distributors and major Linux families like Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Red Hat, OpenSUSE, Arch Linux, and Slackware, while others are in smaller clusters.

Now the Linux Foundation has published a detailed report on the past 25 years of Linux and said that around 13,500 developers from 1,300 companies have collaboratively contributed for the development of the Linux kernel since the entire project went live on Git in 2005.

It was also said that you could even download the full 2016 report “Linux Kernel Development – How Fast It is Going, Who is Doing It, What They are Doing, and Who is Sponsoring It,” released by the Linux Foundation on Monday. If you are even curious to know about the history of this OS, you can read the book, Rebel Code: Inside Linux and the Open Source Revolution, published by Glyn Moody in 2001. This will help you to quench your thrust.

Once again Happy Birthday to Linux!
