The World Wide Web accessing software application also known as web browsers or simply “browser” is used to access and view websites through internet. Some of well-known browsers are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari.
Cybercriminals are continuously looking for new vulnerable systems evolving in digital space for attack therefore securing web browsers is more compulsory now. Outdated browsers are posing to threats to exploit user’s device and their personal information to major security vulnerabilities.
In order to prevent security threats and load web pages promptly, updating browsers on regular basis is necessary. Nowadays certain modern web browsers automatically update themselves where as others require manual inputs to download and install.
The main reason to keep your browser up-to-date is to keep your device safe, secure, prevention from identity theft and various malware attacks. With each update you will also be able to take advantage of new features, tools and technologies.
Guide to update some popular browsers
Google Chrome
Although it automatically updates the latest version available, you can use following steps to verify and manually update it.
- Open Google chrome browser
- Clickon the control button in the upper-right corner of the screen (three horizontal dots)
- Go to Settings
- Click on About Chrome
- Update if new version is available, click the Re-lunch button
- Else it will show Chrome is up-to-date
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Mozilla Firefox
- Click the Open menu button on the upper-right corner
- Go to Help option
- Select About Firefox
- Click the Restart to Update Firefox button to update new features.
Internet Explorer
With its Window update feature, Microsoft automatically updates the Internet Explorer. In Windows 10 users cannot turn off the Window Update feature.
- Click the Windows Key at the lower-left corner of the screen
- Type “check for updates” and press enter
- Click on the Check for Updates under the Windows Update section,
Microsoft now uses Microsoft Edge as the default browsers and supports only last updated version Internet Explorer 11 for backward compatibility.
Safari
If the Apple updates are turned on the Safari automatically gets updated else it doesn’t.
- Open Apple menu
- Select app store option
- Click updates selectors
- Find safari and click update
Similarly, on mobile phones also web browsers automatically update themselves running on Android, IOS and windows platform. Open Play Store/ App Store/Windows Apps to check for the updated browser version and install just in case.
