In a monumental stride toward digital inclusion, Nepal Telecom has successfully launched its 4G internet service in the remote district of Humla.

The service, which is now operational in several rural municipalities, including Chankheli, is poised to revolutionize the lives of local residents, offering high-speed connectivity that was previously unimaginable.
This launch is a key part of the national telecom provider’s ongoing mission to bridge the digital divide and bring modern communication services to the most isolated parts of the country.
The rollout began with Chankheli Rural Municipality, where locals have already expressed immense relief and excitement. For a district often cut off from the rest of the country due to its challenging geography and harsh weather, reliable internet access is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline.
Harka Budha, a health worker stationed at Melchham Health Post, shared his enthusiasm, stating that the 4G service has significantly accelerated their work.
The ability to quickly send and receive patient data, consult with specialists in urban centers, and access online medical resources is a transformative development for rural healthcare.
This expansion is not limited to Chankheli alone. Nepal Telecom has confirmed that 4G service is also now available in Tajakot, Adanchuli, and Sarkegad rural municipalities in Humla, as well as in Soru rural municipality in neighboring Mugu and surrounding areas of Bajura and Mugu districts.
This extensive coverage in the lower belt of Humla district is expected to provide near-complete 4G access to thousands of residents.
The strategic placement of new towers and network infrastructure has been a challenging but rewarding effort, overcoming the geographical barriers that have long hindered communication in the region.
The benefits of this new connectivity extend far beyond mere convenience. Pyarilal Shahi, Chairman of Changkheli Rural Municipality, expressed his strong belief that the arrival of 4G will create new opportunities in key sectors.
“The beginning of the 4G internet service is expected to create new opportunities in the areas of education, healthcare, and communications,” he stated.
For students, this means access to online learning platforms and educational content, unlocking a world of knowledge that was previously inaccessible.
For businesses, it opens up the possibility of e-commerce and digital financial services, connecting local entrepreneurs to national and international markets.
The launch of 4G in Humla is a significant milestone for Nepal’s broader digital transformation agenda. For years, the country has been working to expand its telecommunication infrastructure, but progress in remote, high-altitude regions like Humla has been particularly slow.
This achievement demonstrates the government’s and Nepal Telecom’s commitment to ensuring that no part of the country is left behind in the digital age. The successful deployment of this network will serve as a blueprint for future expansions into other hard-to-reach areas.
While this launch is a cause for celebration, it also highlights the continued need for investment in infrastructure to support this new connectivity.
Ensuring a stable power supply and establishing robust maintenance systems for the network towers will be crucial for the long-term success of the service.
Nevertheless, the immediate impact on the community is undeniable. From a healthcare worker speeding up his performance to a local government official envisioning a future of new opportunities, the stories from Humla are a powerful testament to the transformative power of technology.
