Illegal parking fees halted at TU Cricket Ground following immediate media exposure.
Illegal Parking Fees Halted
Spectators attending the Nepal Premier League (NPL) matches in Kirtipur had been facing unauthorized charges. A local organization, the Kirtipur Development Society, was illegally collecting these fees from fans. This practice has now been stopped.
Unauthorized Charges Spark Complaints
The Kirtipur Development Society was demanding excessive fees from cricket spectators. They charged Rs 100 for motorcycles. An additional Rs 50 was even levied for helmets. Four-wheelers were charged Rs 150. This collection was happening without any official authorization.
Spectators were highly dissatisfied. They complained that the group forcibly collected the money. The lack of accountability was a major issue. Fans felt exploited simply for attending the cricket matches at the Tribhuvan University (TU) Cricket Ground.
Lack of Official Approval Confirmed
The key issue was the lack of proper approval. The Kirtipur Development Society had not secured permission from any relevant body.
These include the Tribhuvan University (TU) itself, the Cricket Association Nepal (CAN), the Kirtipur Municipality, or the District Administration Office.
In essence, the group was operating completely outside the legal framework. This was confirmed by multiple authorities following the public outcry.
Authorities Intervene, Fee Collection Stops
Reports of the unauthorized fee collection quickly spread through media channels. This immediate exposure prompted swift action from the authorities. As a direct result, the illegal fee collection at the venue ceased immediately.
Officials from several key institutions intervened. These included representatives from TU, CAN, and the Kirtipur Municipality.
They all confirmed that no one was authorized to manage parking or collect any fees from spectators. The official parking arrangements were already in place.
Designated Parking Already Mandated
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police had already designated specific parking areas for spectators. Importantly, there were no charges mandated for using these designated spots.
The action by the Kirtipur Development Society was not only unauthorized but also contradicted the established traffic management plan. The illegal collection was effectively exploiting a high-profile sporting event.
Silence from the Collecting Body
Since the collection was stopped and the matter went public, the Kirtipur Development Society has maintained silence. The organization has yet to issue any official statement. There has been no clarification regarding the unauthorized collection of thousands of rupees from fans.
This incident highlights the importance of media scrutiny and public awareness in curbing unauthorized financial practices at public events. Transparency and accountability must be ensured, especially when citizens are charged for public services or access. Fans can now enjoy the NPL without the fear of unauthorized charges.
