According to him, IME has played a major role in solving the problem of informal money transfers like hundi, which often failed to deliver money to the intended recipients. “IME’s work is a great contribution to the country. We need people who are willing to take risks, create jobs, and explore business opportunities,” he said.
Deputy Governor Bambahadur Mishra Commends IME
Deputy Governor Bambahadur Mishra praised IME for bringing remittance into Nepal through formal channels. He said that the company had proven its capability and expressed belief that IME would continue to follow the rules and policies set by the central bank in the future. “IME has succeeded in collecting foreign earnings through legal means. We trust they will comply with our new policies and directives,” Mishra stated.
IME’s Journey: From Challenge To Success
IME Group Founder Chairman and FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal reflected on the early days of IME. He explained how there was little belief in formal remittance systems when they started. “Despite doubts, we succeeded in bringing foreign remittances into the country. Hard work and honesty made this possible,” he said.
He also added that IME focuses on national priorities, the needs of citizens, and the interests of business owners. “We have always worked by giving importance to what the country needs and what people expect,” Dhakal explained.
Origin Of The IME Movement
IME Limited Chairman Hem Raj Dhakal shared how his struggles in sending money home from Japan led to the formation of the company. Between 1994 and 1998, I lived in Japan. Sending money to Nepal was difficult back then. That experience encouraged me to start the IME movement,” he said.
His words demonstrated how real-life experiences and the challenges faced by migrant workers helped create a service that would later benefit millions of Nepalis.
CEO Shares Impact Of Remittance Services
IME CEO Diwakar Paudel spoke about the company’s early days and the importance of its service. “Twenty-five years ago, we began remittance services by understanding the country’s needs during a difficult time,” he said.
He added that IME’s work helped improve the living standards of many people. “Our services have not only solved financial issues but have also improved people’s quality of life. We listened to what the nation needed and acted accordingly.”
A Milestone Celebration
The event brought together key figures from the banking sector, entrepreneurs, and IME employees. It marked a major milestone for the company, which has grown steadily over the past two and a half decades.
All speakers emphasized the importance of remittance in Nepal’s economy and how formalizing the process has helped the nation. They also highlighted IME’s contributions in creating financial access for migrant workers and their families.
The ceremony ended with a shared vision. Stakeholders agreed that collaboration between the private sector and regulatory bodies, such as the NRB, is key to future economic progress.
Conclusion
IME Limited’s 25th anniversary celebrated more than just a timeline. It honored a journey of transformation—one that began with personal hardship and turned into a national financial solution. As Nepal Rastra Bank pledges to support access to capital and entrepreneurship, IME’s success story stands as proof that the right ideas, when acted on with dedication, can create a long-lasting impact.
