IT Policy Reforms Necessary For Nepal’s Growth: NAS-IT President

An interaction program titled “State, Opportunities, and Challenges of the Nepalese IT Industry,” organized by the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJON), concluded on Wednesday in Kathmandu. Industry leaders gathered to discuss the roadmap for transforming Nepal into a digital powerhouse.
IT Policy Reforms Necessary
The Urgent Need for Policy Adaptation Speaking at the event, Gaurav Raj Pandey, President of the Nepal Association for Software and IT Services Companies (NAS-IT), highlighted the stagnation in the country’s IT policies. “We have failed to evolve our policies according to the changing times,” Pandey remarked.
He pointed out that while neighboring India implemented robust IT policies as early as 1991, Nepal has yet to establish a comprehensive framework even by 2025. He urged the government to fast-track legislative changes to keep pace with global technological advancements.
Nepal as a Global Tech Hub. Adding to the discussion, Elisa Shrestha, General Secretary of NAS-IT, emphasized the organization’s role as a service-oriented body dedicated to promoting the tech sector.
She noted that Nepal is rapidly emerging as a significant player in the international IT market. “NAS-IT is working tirelessly to brand Nepal as a global Tech Hub, showcasing the immense scale and potential of our local IT industry to the world,” Shrestha stated.
The SEJON interaction highlighted that while the Nepalese IT sector possesses immense potential, outdated regulations remain a significant hurdle.
For Nepal to capitalize on the digital economy, a collaborative effort between the private sector and the government is required to modernize policies and foster innovation.
